Get the FASTEST reading rectal thermometer out there. I think mine is 5 seconds. They'll show you how to use it.

We now use the underarm one that she's older, and that works fine. My pedi also said we could try an ear one now that she is over 1, but when they are little they want a rectal temp.

Braun Thermoscan, it says it's fine for infants but we're going to ask the pedi as well and see if we need a rectal also. Either way, the Thermoscan has worked well for us adults!

rectal thermometer, not sure which yet. I shudder to do that to my baby, but it's the most accurate for a newborn!

I have several friends who highly recommend a forehead thermometer. I think the brand is Exergen?? I hear they're around $30 at Costco if you have a membership, $50ish everywhere else.
