First, this is str8ota. Thanks peetie for the AE!!!
This morning my ob called and told me that because of my age and that my 2nd round of bw came back at 1.5 that I have a 1 in 60 chance of something being wrong and that I should have an amnio. He told me I shouldn't worry but I can't help from freaking out!
If any of you have had an amnio tell me what I can expect.
And why won't the effing reproductive genetic place call em back to schedule my appointment???
Plus this whole effing bump not working thing is just pissing me off!
Re: NT # came back and I'm freaking out!
I have never had an amnio so I can't help you there BUT I will say you really should not worry too much, what good is worry?
And I agree the bump this is pissing me off as well.
I think sinisterkat had an amnio just recently, so if she doesn't respond back to this post, you may want to reach out to her.
Also, those odds are not crazy bad, and as I said in text to you, there's so many false positives with the NT scan! I know it's easy to worry, but you just need to try and focus on all the positives.
I hope the scheduling place calls you soon so that you can put this behind you.
You're welcome - sorry it is such a silly one though.
I don't know anything about amnio. I hope they call back soon to make your appointment.
I haven't had an amnio but I'm pretty sure I'll have to have one. I was told the same thing about tests results coming back skewed because of age. (I'm 37) I understand your panic though, I'm sure I'll be posting something similar in a few weeks.
I would try to not worry too much, from what I understand the amnio is quick and is a lot more accurate in determining anything unusual.
{{{hugs}}}
Hi - resident lurker here... ( I have to keep up on your ladies... after all you are the only ones in this earth that I am actually happy that your pg {yes, I am a bitter ***}).
I had an amnio like procedure. They numb the skin w/ some local anis and then along w/ a u/s tech- guide the needle into the ute and extract some fluid. Did it hurt? Not bad. I felt it - but, it wasn't terrible.
My SIL had one. She said it was quick, but it hurt. Thats all she really said about it. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Big hugs to you!
Bloggin' It
In a previous pregnancy I had poor numbers from the bloodwork and along with an u/s that showed some big issues. The doctor really didn't give me a choice about the amnio, she basically told me the chances of the amnio causing a m/c was much less of a chance of my baby having something wrong. I did it right then at that moment, and I will tell you it was not bad. She was watching the baby on the u/s machine as she did the amnio. It didn't hurt, it felt a little wierd and it was over quickly.
This pregnancy the numbers from the b/w were again a little off, but not nearly as bad as the first. The u/s showed nothing off, so I choose not to do the amnio this time.
Good luck with the amnio and I hope the results will be reassure you that the baby is fine!
I don't have experience with amnios... but I just wanted to tell you I'm thinking of you as I know this has got to be scary.
When my doctor explained risks and odds, he reminded us a few times that risks are not set in stone. As your risks get higher, that's scary yes... but they're just risks.
T&P for you hun. *hugs*

First of all, I'm so sorry that have to be freaked out by this right now. Bigt (((HUGS))) I understand what you are going through.
I had very similar numbers as you are describing, just a few weeks ago, which were unusual for my age. My OB basically let me make the decision about the amniocentesis, and gave me a referral for a specialist. I had a great experience talking with the genetic counselor. She was able to assuage some of my fears about the abnormal test results, but we still decided to go ahead with the amnio. In my head, I figured that if the risk percentage for the amnio was lower than the risk of having a baby with the disease, then we would probably opt for the procedure. We just couldn't stand not knowing what would be in store for us, and the baby.
I wish that I could say the amniocentesis itself was a breeze, but as you may have read, I did not find it a very pleasant experience. However, I suspect that I had an inexperienced resident performing the amnio, because I was at a teaching facility, and I could just tell. The rest of the staff were experienced and wonderful, and tried to calm me. After it's done, it seems like a short procedure, and there aren't many restrictions. While it's going on, I'm not going to lie, it seems like it takes forever. I didn't have my DH there to distract me, which would have helped.
In the end, we got normal test results back, and nothing happened to LO as a sequelae to the amnio. At this point, I am glad that we had the procedure done, but it is a very personal decision. If you'd like to talk me, feel free to PM me.
ETA: I received no numbing agent. Like I said, there is probably a big difference between an experienced practitioner, and an inexperienced resident. Maybe you want to inquire ahead of time about who will be performing the procedure. (((HUGS))) again.
