I am headed out on a cross-country road trip tomorrow morning. It will take two days before I reach my destination and it will be just me and DS in the car. He is stilling RFing and generally happy in the car. He has never been in the car for more than a few hours and will start to get cranky after a while. I will usually sit in the back with him once he starts to fuss since DH is driving. I know he will not be happy to not see me all day except for when we stop. I wanted to RF until he turns 2 as I have done all the research and know how much safer it is. My entire family gives me a hard time about RFing him for this long anyways (which I just ignore), but wonder if it would make the trip easier on the both of us if he was FFing.
Re: Help me decide if I should FF...
Do you have a mirror so you can see him and he can see you?
I swear that's the only reason DD does so well with RFing. She can see me and I can make faces at her and she can make faces at me. She's perfectly content. Even on long car rides by ourselves!
Ditto to all of this! Also we have a portable DVD player that hangs between the back seat headrests. Wonder Pets and Ruby and Max got us through our last road trip!

That's what I would do. We just drove to St. Louis and back (took us 2 days each way) with two RFing 16-month-olds. We had mirrors and a portable DVD player and it went OK. DH and I both went, but with two car seats in the back neither of us can fit back there so it was a similar situation to yours.
If you FF for the trip, it might be hard to go back to RF. I say to try the other suggestions first, and you can always pull over somewhere and turn the carseat around mid-trip if it really isn't working. Put the carseat manual in the glove box so you know how to do it in case it comes to that.
