Did you air out your crib mattress?

Mine just arrived today and I want to put all the bedding on it to make the nursery finally look complete, but I'm not sure if I should air out the mattress for a few days first..

 What did you do?

Re: Did you air out your crib mattress?

  • Yes. I left it 'open' with no bedding and stuff for a couple weeks.

I really want an organic one this time but they are so expensive.  =(

  • Yeah, we did, just because it smelled like the plastic packaging.

  • Why don't you make up the bed, take a few pics, and then take everything off and air it out? That way you'll at least get to see what it looks like, and post some on here...
  • We only did because the crib wasn't built.  We let it "air" out for about 4 weeks, and it seriously needed it.  It was in a back bedroom and everytime we went in the room had a plastic smell to it.  By the time we finally got it in the room and set up it didn't smell at all.
  • We hope to.  I saw it was bought off the registry.  I hope mil bought it because I told her I was concerned that I wouldn't have enough time to air it out.  My theory is she is taking care of that for me.

  • mine doesn't smell at all, of course that could just be my sinuses being blocked and I can't smell the plastic hehe

but I guess it won't hurt to air it out, I'll put the bedding on, take pictures then just air it out for a week or so!

  • We aired out our mattress for about 2 weeks but we were also waiting for our bedding to come in so it worked perfect on the timing.  I understand about wanting to have the nursery look complete, we just got our bedding and I really wanted to put in on the crib.  I am going to keep it there for a few weeks and then wash it just before baby comes.
  • I didnt' know you were supposed to do this. I think I will go home and take my sheet off.
