Economy frustration

So I thought our luck was turning around (I won Jaime's blog give away) but I guess I was wrong...

Our Hawaii property has been a constant battle. There are good months and bad months... the good months are fully booked but still don't pay the mortgage. In over a yr of renting it we've only come out on top once... it's frustrating. I understand the economy is bad but now we're in a bad situation with it. I contacted our rental agent who is also a real estate agent and told him he needs to get it on the market as soon as he can... I'm hoping that it will sell and that we won't be too upside down in it... Please say a little prayer, cross your fingers, positive vibes, whatever it is that you do :)

TIA!

Re: Economy frustration

  • Boo, I am sorry you have to sell it Sarah.  I am sending you tons of vibes that you get a quick and good offer on it though!  I am frustrated with the economy these days too...no one at my company is getting a raise this year and we're only getting small bonuses.  It's better than nothing, I suppose, but our company is not stuggling at all, it's more like a "message" that we're being fiscally conservative in these tough economic times because everyone else is.  And J's restaurant has been slow so his income has dropped nearly 25% which is also stretching us quite thin right now. *sigh*

  • Oh, I hope it sells soon.  I'm sorry you'll have to let it go.  But think of all the joy you had while you owned it!  This economy just plain sucks... hope it all works out. Big Smile

Yeah it seems as everyone is stretched quite thin, we've made tons of cuts around the house and stuff but there's just no where left to cut. Thankfully we are able to food on our plates and pay this mortgage here... I guess there's lots to be thankful for but it's sometimes hard to remember that.

Good thing for J is that when he's finally done with school, he'll be in my shoes and have job security! Nurses are always in demand, it may not be the kind of nursing you want to do but in the end, it's a job. I'm thankful that I have a job in an area of nursing that I love. I must count my blessings because lately there have been too many tears and I don't want to count those!

  • I too am sad you have to sell the condo but I am sure it will be a huge weight lifted off your shoulders.  You'll always have a home in your heart for Hawaii anyway :)  Best of luck, I'll be sending you vibes for a quick sale.

Yeah, I am trying to keep my eye on the prize.  Once J is done with school our economic situation should be MUCH better.  Although now he's talking about continuing on to get his D.O.  Arg!  MORE schooling.  I know it's his dream to become a doctor or at least a nurse practitioner but I want him to start working in the medical field first, before continuing on...so, we shall see.

Hang in there Sarah...and you're right to focus on what you do have...power of positive intention and all.  But I hear you...it's hard to cut back when you've already cut back a lot.  I was so frustrated yesterday watching an Oprah episode on family finances...the ads were "watch us and we'll show you how to save money and get out of debt, etc."...well the families they profiled all have insane spending habits!  Like one family who eats out every.single.meal.  WTF?  So the financial guru is all, "I'm going to save you 12K/year....you're going to eat at home for two meals a day and only one out."  All of their money-saving solutions were along those lines...like "don't shop for entertainment...only make planned purchases, etc."  We've been doing that for years already.

We recently analyzed our budget (again) and the only places we can scale back are on food (our groceries run about $80-100/week right now) and cable (we have a phone/internet/TV bundle)...so we shall see if we take the plunge and cancel our cable TV (my mom would just die, I think) and start shopping smarter than we already do (although we're both unwilling to compromise on nutritional value to save a buck...eg. eating ramen noodles, canned/processed food that is cheaper than fresh, etc.)  Thankfully, we'll be paying off a personal loan by the end of the year and one of our cars by the end of summer.  More than likely though, that "freed-up" money will be eaten by daycare expenses since we'll have to put Libby in full-time in January when J starts his clinical rotations. *sigh*
