Mine just arrived today and I want to put all the bedding on it to make the nursery finally look complete, but I'm not sure if I should air out the mattress for a few days first..
Why don't you make up the bed, take a few pics, and then take everything off and air it out? That way you'll at least get to see what it looks like, and post some on here...
We only did because the crib wasn't built. We let it "air" out for about 4 weeks, and it seriously needed it. It was in a back bedroom and everytime we went in the room had a plastic smell to it. By the time we finally got it in the room and set up it didn't smell at all.
We hope to. I saw it was bought off the registry. I hope mil bought it because I told her I was concerned that I wouldn't have enough time to air it out. My theory is she is taking care of that for me.
We aired out our mattress for about 2 weeks but we were also waiting for our bedding to come in so it worked perfect on the timing. I understand about wanting to have the nursery look complete, we just got our bedding and I really wanted to put in on the crib. I am going to keep it there for a few weeks and then wash it just before baby comes.
I didnt' know you were supposed to do this. I think I will go home and take my sheet off.

Re: Did you air out your crib mattress?
Yes. I left it 'open' with no bedding and stuff for a couple weeks.
I really want an organic one this time but they are so expensive. =(
mine doesn't smell at all, of course that could just be my sinuses being blocked and I can't smell the plastic hehe
but I guess it won't hurt to air it out, I'll put the bedding on, take pictures then just air it out for a week or so!

Mine had a vinyl cover that had directions to wipe down with warm soapy water.
