Anyone have a constipation relief suggestions that don't involve food?

I'm already taking colace with my zofran. And any juices or fruits are out of the question.

  • The only thing that works (occasionally) for me is Milk of Magnesia.  It's really gross though.

  • Well... what i have tried doing is eat lilttle servings more times a day instead of eating a 3 complete meals. That has helped a lot. But I'm always hungry.

How fast does it work? I might be willing to try it if it give me relief.

  • Try a fiber cereal, I with my first pregnancy I had a hard time with constipation and started taking fiber pills. They are natural and I was able to take 3-5 a day and didn't have any issues the rest of the pregnancy.
  • If you are looking for quick relief, a half cup of coffee always does it for me as well, or warm prune juice

I took M.O.M. (the max recommended dosage) and it hit me about 30-45 min after. and then a few more times. If you can take it during the day. I took it at night like the back of the bottle recommended, but then I was up in the bathroom numerous times through out the night.

Yeah...my pics were so old. I got 3 kids. Nuff said. :)
  • The MOM is my last resort and she's right about it tasting nasty. Keep a big glass of water close to chase it after you take it.

I started putting 2 tsp flax seed meal on my yogurt in the morning and I've stopped having any problems at all. It's amazing and IMO, a much tastier option than the MOM.

I also have some fiber wafers that I used to take at night, again, not very tasty but it's an easy fix.

If you are constipated though, you should probably look into a gentle laxative because adding more fiber (like food or juice) will just make it worse and more painful.

    Good luck. I feel pain.

  • Be careful with the MOM it can really dehydrate you.  I would suggest a glycerin suppository, it works within 15 mins, causes no cramping or diarrhea  just softens the hardened stool in the rectum which tends to keep the rest in.

  • My DD has that prob alot. The pedi recommended Miralax. A little mixed with juice, milk etc helps ALOT!  One dose every other day or so works like a charm and keeps her happy.

  • My midwife suggested Miralax if I don't go at least every other day.  Also, she told me to do Colace twice a day, not just once (this was after my trip to the ER to fix the problem)
  • I need something, too.  I have been drinking water like there is no tomorrow.  The coffee is what I need to try.  I haven't had coffee since I found out, but I'm thinking it's high time I had some.  My dr. said it was fine as long as I had no more than 2 cups, which for me is one cup since I like my coffee strong and bitter, enough to grow hair on your chest!  lol

  • Mirilax. It is OTC. If it works well for you, ask your dr to write a prescription if you have a good prescription plan. There is a generic that you can order for cheaper than the OTC cost.

  • I tried everything the dr. said and nothing was working for me, so I ate whole wheat pasta with pesto on it and the fiber/oil mix got me started (and I drank a lot of water).  You might want to try something like that.
  • Benefiber works... you can add it to a bottle of water each morning and in a couple of days it really does help. I would get the plain one though, it changes the water taste slightly but better than not going. Good luck. I just started having the same problem.
