Warm enough vs. SIDS

I know this question has been asked in regards to babies who are swaddled, but my son is 16 wks and I don't swaddle him.  We live in the Northeast.  What should I have him wear at night?  I know you aren't supposed to have the house temperature be above 72 degrees.  So what should he wear to be warm enough, but safe in regards to SIDS?

Re: Warm enough vs. SIDS

  • We've been dressing DS in a footie sleeper with a sleep sack over that.  We also put socks on his hands to keep his hands warm and we keep a cotton hat on his head. (Although, he always tugs the hat off in his sleep.)

  • Good question. We swaddle but lately I've been doing a long sleeved onsie + footed pjs + miracle blanket + extra receiving blanket on top to prevent him from busting out of the miracle blanket. Oh and socks. So I'm wondering if that is too much.
  • I put ds in long sleeved, footed pjs.  I have a blanket on him too, but I just wrap it around him.
  • We use a footed sleeper and a swaddle me blanket.  Also - make sure you run a fan in their bedroom.  They just released a study that having a fan running in the babies room reduces the risk of SIDS by 72%!  Thats huge.  I guess it has something to do with bad circulation of air, causes higher levels of Carbon dioxide.....
  • We never used a blanket with DD and she was fine in just footed pjs.

DS wears a short sleeve onies, footed pjs and socks on his hands. I hope that is enough because I won't put a blanket in his crib.

  • I just switched from a long-sleeved onesie and a sleep sack to footed pjs and the sleep sack.  DS wasn't STTN, but now he is.  I think the little guy was getting cold!  I would think you'd really have to over bundle them for the SIDS risk to factor in.

My NICU Dr. told me that it is no longer recommended to wear hats as that also puts them at higher risk for SIDS.  I thought it was weird, as 3 years ago they told me to put a hat on my DS.  Anyway, just wanted to put that out there.....

  • We use footie pj's only.  No blankets at all.  On a very cool night we might put socks on him.  He never seems cold.

  • Footed Pj's only.  I think I have one hot baby though.  He gets warm very easily.
