3rd Trimester

Anyone 99% sure they are NOT being delivered by their doc?

The way my clinic works (I have Kaiser, so I only had the choice of going to a Kaiser clinic for my coverage to work) there is a group of MD's and MW's and I can see any of them throughout my pregnancy and/or choose to see the same one every time.  I went with a MW - really like her and have stuck with her.  I have the choice between two hospitals for my deliver and they way they are structured is that there are always at least 2 MD's on 24 hour rotations and one MW that works from like 8-5pm.  When I go in to deliver - I just get whomever is there!  My MW said there is pretty much only a 1% chance she would be the one to deliver me.  It really sucks knowing that it will be a stranger.  Anyone else in the same boat?

  • Well, my clinic is closing August 2 and so there is talk of their last delivery being June 18. My due date is June 24. Sooo I may have to sign a release form to have a recommended doctor deliver me. I could switch clinics, but at this point it seems sort of silly. If I happen to go before June 18 or they push back their last delivery date then one of my doctors will deliver me, all of which I know and love!

  • I am high risk and have to switch doctors so i can deliver at a special hospital. I haven't even met my new doc yet. My 1st appointment isn't till next week! So even if he does do the delivery he will pretty much be a stranger to me :)
  • I have Kaiser too and yep it's the same for me.

Same here.  I don't really care though.  Kaiser files are electronic so whom ever is working L&D will have my history and information.  I have full confidence in the doctors and nurses.

  • If it makes you feel any better... I literally did not know who ended up delivering my baby until I finally asked my OB this time (I switched practices) to look it up for me. I was there for so long, and had so many shift changes, I absolutely could not remember who ended up delivering.

  • Unless I go early I will more than likely have a different doc. My last appt is on July 21st and I'm due on July 22nd. I noticed on the appt sheet they gave me that I'm scheduled to see a different doc on that last appt. I asked my OB about it and she said she "might" be on vacation that week (like she wouldn't know...I think she just didn't want me to freak out on her). I haven't brought it up again because honestly I'm not too terribly concerned about it. I don't think it's going to be a huge concern in the heat of the moment.

  • My original OB, 100% sure he won't.

I am hoping to hold on long enough to be delivered by my favorite high-risk resident with the fellow or attending I like.  I am just praying this one fellow is NOT on call when I am ready to deliver.  I might even delay just so it isn't her!

  • The practice I go to has something like 12 docs.  They say they'll try to have your doc on hand, but no guarantees.
  • Our system works the same way but they make you see all the MW's and MD's at your appointments so that when you go into labor, you won't get a complete stranger. Of course there are some that I like a lot better than the others but either way, I am not too concerned.
  • Kaiser here, too. I felt weird about it at first, but since then I've heard nothing but good things about our local L & D. I figure by the time I'm pushing, I won't care who's catching!

My OB office works the exact same way.  I'm kinda bummed but in the same sense I really doubt at that time that I will care!
  • I'm having a scheduled c-section five weeks from tomorrow and the doctor I'm scheduled with hasn't even reported to the hospital yet and won't until just a few days before my c-section...I *might* get to have an appointment with him prior to the c-section and I might just get a few minutes to talk to him before the surgery.  I really do love military medicine most of the time, but this sounds like a lot of fun, no?
  • The practice I go to has 4 OBs and 1 midwife.  I was hoping to see all 4 doctors during my pregnancy, but I've been having some BP issues so my doctor kept me to herself.

From what I understand, if I have the baby during the day ("normal" business hours, M-F), my OB will be the one who delivers.  If the baby comes at night or on the weekend, it'll be whichever doctor is on call.

Between today and a week after my due date, my OB is on call 5 out of the 16 days, so I'd guess my odds of having her deliver are pretty low. :-(

  • A lot (if not most) of OBGYN offices have several docs that work in the practice. In that case, you could get any one of the doc's, depending on who is on call when you go into labor. It's just part of the whole process. My doc office has 6 doctors who deliver babies and the patients are encouraged to meet all of them at least once during their prenatal care. I have only met 4 of the 6, but I figure if I happen to get one of the others, that's what will happen. You have to remmeber, there is no telling when you will go into labor and it's really not feasible, nor fair to the doctor, to be on call 24/7 to delivery every woman that plans on delivering there. It sucks, and I would prefer my OBGYN doc to be the one who deliveres, but I know it's not possible to guarantee that. There is website that you can go to and look up reviews for doctors and their education.experience background, etc. It may help to ease any fears or anxieties you may have about the other docs there.

  • Unless I end up with a scheduled C, I won't know.  I'm with the UCLA OBGYN office and it'll be whichever OB is on call when we arrive.
  • My doctor's office is a practice so any of the docs will be on call.  I've met a few of them but the odds are the doctor that I usually go to will not be the one delivering my baby.  I'm cool w/it

  • I go to a practice with 3 OB's and a midwife, and whoever is on call delivers. For this reason, they have you see each of them for prenatal visits so you at very least have a name and a face.

This doesn't bother me in the slightest, since it is the L&D nurses who really help you through the whole process. Unless you have a private midwife (or deliver at home or in a birthing center), your doctor or midwife won't show up until you are fully dilated and ready to push if everything is going well.
