Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Babies drinking soda?!

I saw this on the 3-6 board.  They were talking about giving juice to LOs and some said they drank soda as babies.  A couple people said they drank soda at 9 months old and their parents would give them several cups of soda a day.  That is nuts!!

Do you know anyone that gives their LO soda at this age?

Re: Babies drinking soda?!

  • The day that DD learned to drink from a straw, she tasted my Dr pepper and a couple other times we've gotten her Sonic slushies (she would drink that when everything else hurt during teething) but other than that, she gets milk, water, and juice at church on Sundays.

  • I still don't give soda to my ds, at almost 2 1/2. I just don't see the need in it. But I see it all the time when we are out to eat or just out and about, babies sipping on sweet tea, drinking sodas.
  • I don't care if other parents give their children soda.  As for us, we have no intention of giving soda to our children any time soon.  We see absolutely no reason to.

I too see NO reason to do this.  heck- DS pretty much only drinks milk and water.  I've tried juice and he won't drink it!   So, sure as heck not going to try soda w/ him.

  • Not that young, but my girls have had Sprite before. They don't like it.

  • We have never given soda to either of our boys (ages 1 and 2) and don't plan on it anytime soon. I really, really don't see the point of introducing something so unhealthy when they are perfectly happy with milk or water.

Honestly, I wish my parents would have done the same. I have no idea what age they started allowing us to have soda, but I know we did drink it as kids. I see it all the time when we go out to eat too.

  • I told DH that there would be no soda for DD until she is 5 years old.   He thinks I'm nuts, but he is totally addicted to soda...it's the ONLY thing he drinks and it drives me nuts.  If I hadn't "laid down the law" I'm sure he would be giving DD soda every day, too.

I see no reason to give kids that age soda...definitely not before 2 years old.  After that, I might not have a problem with it once in a while for special occasions, but if I give in once DH will give it to her whenever she asks (which is every time she sees him drinking it) so for us it's completely out.

  • I remember my mom putting a little Dr. Pepper in my baby sister's bottle when we went out to eat once when Sis was 5 months old. I don't know WHAT Mom was thinking; she was normally such a health nut! But Sis was extreeeemely hyper after that and did not sleep well that night!

My boys have never tasted soda. They have, however, each had a sip of my iced coffee once. I was once drinking it and they were both going nuts wanting to drink out of my cup. I broke down and let them each have a sip figuring they'd hate it for the bitterness and stop freaking out to try it ... and they both loved it! Oops. Won't try that again!

DH offered DS some iced coffee when we were shopping at albertson's and DS was so hyper he did not nap that afternoon and I wanted to take a nap. I told DH to not to give him anything with caffeine because that is more work for me and DS will never sleep.

  • He's had sips of different sodas and teas, but I've never given him his own cup. When we go out he gets milk and when that's gone he drinks my water (I don't drink soda). At home, he gets milk, water, or way watered down juice.
  • Put me in the "bad mommy" category, but DS does have soda (from our cups) occasionally and I used to get him to take a paci in the car by dipping it in our soda.  He hated the car AND wasn't a paci fan, but on long trips the little bit of sweet would get him to take the paci long enough to calm down and often fall asleep.  We also taught him to use a straw using soda, only took one or two sips before he had it all figured out and I've never had an issue getting him to use a straw cup for other stuff (water, milk, etc).  He never gets a sippy of soda, heck, he never gets his own soda period, but he does get sips of ours occasionally.  Honestly, he prefers milk or water over everything else.

too funny!  my mom won't admit it now, that she made me iced coffees as a kid.  she's also sort of a health nut.  she did instant coffee mixed into milk, over ice (with sugar of course) and it was delicious!

dh is going to have to curb his soda habit, or hide it and just have sprite which looks like water.  i'm not big on giving soda to kids, in general.

  • yikes - I don't know anyone personally but my sister has told me she has often seen soda in the bottles & sippy cups of babies and toddlers among her ex-DH's family & friends. Apparently it's not a big deal where they live, then again it's pretty common to see kids around there with several silver teeth by the time they hit kindergarten. I'm so glad he's an EX-DH!
  • I have never seen this IRL, but I know when I was growing up parents gave their kids soda from a very young age. We always had soda in our house when I was younger and I am a total Coke addict -- I have at least 3 cans a day, including one every morning when I sit down at work the check my e-mail (some people have a morning cup o'coffee, I have a morning soda) BUT -- my oldest is 4.5 and has NEVER had soda.

She never asks for it and tells people she isn't allowed to drink it when its offered to her. She watches DH and I drink soda constantly and understands that it's a grown-ups drink (just like coffee, wine, iced tea, alcohol, etc).

I don't know when we will "allow" our kids to have it, but I figure the later I wait, the better it will be for them. They eat enough junk as it is, they don't need to drink junk, too.

  • My oldest had her first sip pretty young, I think it was right before her firs birthday.  It was not that I gave it to her though.  I had a drink in my hand from a food place with a straw.  I was carrying her and when I turned my head to talk to my mom she started sucking away at the straw lol.

I rarely even give it to my older 2 kids and they are about to turn 8 and 6.  My parents let us drink it whenever we wanted and however much we wanted.  Now I drink it too much and really need to cut it out all together.  If we are out to eat (we eat out less than once a month) then they can have some sprite or root beer or something that has no caffeine.  My husband will give it to them sometimes at home, a small glass only though and that is once a month or less.

I know one person who gave it to her very young child (I think she was about 6 months) and she also gave her chocolate milk.  Then wondered why her baby spit up ALL the time.

  • YES!  I used to work with a girl who gave both her kids (ages 1 1/2 and 3) Coca Cola in their bottles several times a day!! (She had not even tried to ween either one from their bottles.)

  • I let DS have sips of soda. We don't drink it often but I don't see the big deal with a sip. I don't think I let him have any sips before he was a year old though. I would be one of those people who lets their kid have a sip of coke at a restaurant. That is pretty much the only time I drink it and I order DS a water.

I did see a 1 year old drink 2 cans of Sprite from his sippy on a 4 hour airplane ride once. I thought it was a little excessive, but maybe his stomach was upset from the plane ride? I don't know.

  • We don't drink soda very often, but I'm not into giving it to little kids.  Usually we're drinking something with caffeine, so that throws "just a tiny sip" out the window anyway.
  • my Dh's cousin lets her 2 year old have soda (and whatever else he wants) and then yells at him for being hyper and screamy and wonders why he and his 6 year old sister are chunky.  um...i wonder what it could be ::eyeroll::

DD has never had soda, but we don't drink it either so it's not something she's around anyway.  I don't think it's healthy for me so I won't give it to my kid.  No need.  Soda in bottles puts the image of trailer parks and babies with mullets in my head.

  • DS has never had soda and I'm hoping to make it until at least 5, and even then just on special occassions.  My neighbor let his 18 month old DD have punch (consisting of sprite, various fruit juices, and gelatin) at one of our cookouts though. She actually had multiple sippy cups of punch!

  • My hillbilly parents put sweetened iced tea in my bottles once I was off formula after 1 yr.  I asked my mom why, she said I didn't like milk or juice very much.  I asked what about water??  She said, "just water all the time?"  Crazy.  I wonder why I'm such a caffeine addict now?

My little guy drinks only water and milk and we will keep it that way as long as humanly possible, he loves both so it shouldn't be too difficult.  And what I usually have around is Diet Coke, NO WAY would I give him that, though I see parents letting their kids have diet drinks.

i almost peed in  my pants.  thats the best

  • HECK NO! I was 6 I think before I even got koolaid, and my mom was ticked about that even then! DH's cousins were given iced tea in their bottles after age 1 (ALL their bottles) and their teeth have ALWAYS been a mess! My kids are all going to be deprived, because water, milk and the VERY occasional juice is all they'll get for a very very VERY long time!
