Do I need to let my OB know now?

I want to go on Mirena. My 6 week appointment is at the end of the month. Do I need to let them know now so I can have it placed that day or will they likely make me wait anyway?

Re: Do I need to let my OB know now?

  • at my office they discuss bc at 6wk pp and bring you back a week or so later to have it placed. Some offices prefer you be on your period when you have it placed as its not as painful.

  • I had a 2 wk PP check up and was asked if I wanted paraguard or Mirena..Mirena had to be ordered in advance at their office so I had to fill out a form and they said theyd place it when it came in (two weeks or so later) getting it placed next week.

Can always call and ask before hand just in case?

As a PP said some drs wait till youre on your period for easier/less painful placement but if you BF my OB said it could be quite a while for that so they will place it before its just preferred on your period (I believe since the cervix is open a bit during menstruation).

  • I told mine at my 6 wk appt. My Dr. wont put it in until 4 months after baby is born because she wants to make sure things are 100% back where they are suppose to be.

  • I had mine put in at the 6-week appointment. They needed to know in advance to order it and because they needed an ultrasound room.

It was super easy, though. I didn't feel it, even though the first one didn't deploy all the way and they had to do it twice.

I would call and let them know you want it. Best to do it all in one appointment if you can.
