Would you live next door to your in-laws....

......if you NEVER had to make dinner again AND got weekly Costco runs taken care of for you?

This is my SIL's set up and I am beginning to get a little jealous....

Re: Would you live next door to your in-laws....

  • Negative. Though I would live cross country from them..

  • Absolutely NOT! I am a person that needs my space. I would maybe consider living that close to my parents (although I would not have dinner with them every night for sure), but would definitely not live that close to my in-laws!!
  • Not in a million years.

  • Negative.

Next week dh and M are going to visit them, I was more then happy to stay home with W.  I have only seen my fil twice, ever!  :)

  • MIL: Yes. I love my MIL, and TJ and I get along well with her H too.

FIL: No way in hell. We lived with him when we were first dating and he went to Costco all the time and made dinner. Still wouldn't live by him again. I'd rather make my own dinner, lol.

ETA: I'd also live next door to my parents, just not FIL. lol

  • Hells to the No. Costco and dinner aren't worth my sanity. I'd rather walk the streets at night to pay for costco than deal with even the best/sanest/"well meaning" family members within walking distance to my house.
  • OHHELLSNO.

  • Guess I'm alone, 'cause I would.  Even without the extra perks.  "Go play at Grandma's" would be heard a lot at our house!

  • No way.  I wouldn't even live that close to my own parents.

  • Never in a million years... I wouldn't live next to anyone in my family or DH's... we like our space.
  • No way. That kind if "help" always has strings. And my MILs cooking is not worth the headache of seeing them that much.

    This.

FWIW, I would live next door to my own parents.  Not sure DH would say the same, though.  Wink

  • Well...my mom lives WITH us - and it has it's benefits and it's negatives.

Next door to my parents - in half a heart beat.

Next door to one set of my ILs - absolutely.

The other set - there is not enough money in the world.

  • I LOVE my in-laws and would like them closer, but next door comes with some added headaches. I would say that I would live within 10 minutes of them :)

  • Never ever in a million year. My IL's are crazy!!
  • My ILs are wonderful but I'm going to have to go with no.  DH and I are too private I think.
  • Yes. With boundaries...lol
  • Bri- my SIL and her family also live directly next door to my inlaws.  They really like it because the inlaws are so helpful with their kids.  I think it totally depends on your relationship with the IL's and also important to set boundaries.

  • ABSOLUTELY! -- to both my parents and DH's parents.

Agree that it totally has to do with your relationship with your parents/IL's.

My parents have been staying with us for the last 7 weeks (gave birth 4-5 weeks ago) and I'm depressed about them leaving this weekend.  I know to others that this seems like a hella long time but I can't express how appreciate DH and I have been for the homecooked meals and the extra set of hands in these early weeks.

  • Never.  I would rather eat PB&J for dinner every night and have to travel to the moon to shop at Costco myself.

  • You couldn't PAY me to live next to my IL's any of them.

If it were my parents in a HEART beat.

But I can see you reason for Jealousy.  IL's favor SIL as well, they live within a few miles of her and watch her daughter for free 4 days a week.  Make them dinner, buy her clothing you name it.  We're lucky if we get a phone call to see how T is.  Done and DONE!

  • Nope, but I do really like them.  I just wouldn't want them next door.
  • Hellz to the noz.

    Never. Ever. Never.

    THIS!

My SIL lived for about 6 years next to her parents (my IL's) and I just think it's so wrong! They would walk in & out eachothers house all the time. I swear neither that no privacy at all. It was great for her though as she had her free babysitters next door & let's just say she defintely got her money's worth out of them!! Now 6 years down the track they don't even talk to oneanother!

  • One of them yes...the other...too much self inflicted drama. Costco is great, but not that great. :)

  • oh man, i live two houses away from my inlaws. across the street from the hubs grandma. and five houses away from his aunt!

they always call before they come over and sometimes i dont see them for a whole week! but they are constantly bringing us food. "im at trader joes, need me to pick anything up for you?" "oh i just made this whole entire strawberry rhubard crisp for you. its still warm. i'll bring it over!"

luckily they are really nice and nowhere near crazy so i dont mind!

  • Nooooooooooo!

I didn't read the other replies, but my SIL and Bro live next to my folks.  The effects on the relationships of all involved will never be fixed.  It's hard to have a marriage and family when you have no privacy, and it just is not a good setup.  Yes, they get free daycare with all meals and lots of assistance with their kids..but still.

Some conveniences just aren't worth it!
