We've been using some regular waffle knit receiving blankets to swaddle in, and then swapped to Miracle Blankets when Will started kicking out of the swaddling. Then the little turd started kicking out of the Miracle Blanket, so I looked around for an alternative and found the Woombie:
Kick out of THAT, you little Houdini!
They're made of a stretchy material so the baby can move a little more than a traditional swaddle, but not all that much (it still prevents the startle reflex) and they can also move their arms up to their chest like you see in the picture (I just zipped my guys in with their arms already up like that because they both prefer it over having them at their sides). I got the Original style - it has a 2-way zipper so you can do diaper changes or checks in the middle of the night without fully removing the Woombie.
Anyway, I got them in the mail yesterday and tried them out today and OMG. I am in looooove! Our boys usually fuss for a while when they're put down for a nap/sleep, and although both whined a little when they were initially zipped in, they were asleep within 2 minutes (maybe less). HOLY CRAP. They have NEVER gone to sleep that fast! Since this is the first time I've used them, it could just be coincidence (hence the "for now" in my post title lol - I'll give you all an update tomorrow after we try them overnight) but I seriously love them right now!
Re: product RAVE (well, for now lol)
Yay! Glad you found something
This board is really big on swaddling-- makes me feel like we were so ... blah with Brooke-- we only swaddled for a month (or less) [and with the ONE hospital blanket we came home with, no miracle blankets or aiden/anais blankets, etc], no swing or bouncer, no baby carriers or pacifiers or anything of that sort... next baby around maybe we'll try all of this stuff!

That looks super snug and definitely Houdini-proof! I'm glad it worked to put your boys to sleep so well! I hope it continues to work its magic!
We swaddle Johnny at night and yesterday just picked up two muslin blankets because it's starting to get hot and the poor kid was sweating in the other ones we had.
He seems to sleep better swaddled and I'm hoping that swaddling only at night will help him learn the difference between shorter daytime naps and longer nighttime sleeps. Sometimes when he's REALLY fussy in the afternoons, we'll swaddle him and a few times he's fallen asleep almost instantly.
We love swaddling.
If he was a really really good sleeper, we'd probably skip swaddling but anything we can do to get more sleep ourselves, we're all for!
To be honest, I didn't get what the big deal was until I had a baby who NEEDED to be swaddled. Will simply cannot sleep without one - his startle reflex works overtime.

You know, it looks hardcore but it's actually LESS restrictive than the Miracle Blanket. The material is stretchy so they can still move around (kick legs, move arms from sides to chest, etc.) - they just can't escape it. It still suppresses the startle reflex, but it allows more movement than the MB.
i don't think you should worry about this. if brooke didn't NEED to be swaddled then that's ok. some babies just dont sleep well at all w/o one.

Ryan can't sleep without being tightly swaddled either. If he even gets a hand out he'll wake up and scream. That's awesome that you guys didn't need all that baby gear!!! We on the other hand thank the Good Lord for it being invented otherwise I would have pulled all of my hair out by now and been totally insane because of my little Fussypants!
Ahhh finally I know someone who has used one of these! I was eyeing off Woombies for the duration of my pregnancy with Samara and was SO close to buying one (forget why I didn't end up getting one before she was born).
She likes her arms out and we stopped swaddling her (with arms in anyway) when she was around 3 weeks so I have just got her in her Grobag now (as of last night).
glad you found something that works!
this was my plan - and so far it worked. I think having him sleep unswaddled during the did shorten the nap time but it also helped because he would still startle himself awake for weeks (months?) but then would be able to fall back asleep. At night I wanted to sleep so bad that I didn't want to take any chances so I would swaddle. When I tried to stop a month ago he wasn't ready. last week he was ready. Has has woken up a couple of times, screamed but went right back to sleep (sometimes finding his thumb to suck too).

Hey Lori...if not using all that stuff worked for you I say big congrats, that's awesome! Every baby is different...maybe your next one will need some of those "props" maybe they won't...I know for us swaddling, white noise, rocking, etc. works everytime for Libby.

Hmm.. it's not that these type of things didn't work for us, it's more that we never tried/heard of them! Poor Brooke
We did swaddle, but only with the hospital blanket and it worked like a CHARM ... until I did it one night and she busted out of it and we never looked back.
Vance tried 'wearing' her in the Moby but she just would have nothing to do with that OR the bjorn and so we had to carry her every where when she was a newborn. I hope the next baby will take to being worn.
And she hated.hated.hated the swing. Would not last two minutes in it. The bouncer we got as a gift... but she was already older, so she'd only go in there when I took a shower or we ate dinner.
And as for white noise... in our old townhouse, the vent/fan in the bathroom was really loud so I'd occasionally go in there when she was crying. That was pretty much it.
It seems like all of these techniques would have came in handy if all ya'll ladies were having babies when Brooke was born.
Next time around though, I'm armed with tips!!
