anyone do PT w/ some OTHER method than 3dayPT?

I am gonna start PT next month with DD since I am a teacher and I will then be able to give her my full attention.  She can pull up/down her pants and speaks well and has asked to go potty a few times and actually done it 5 times (who's counting?) 3 pee, 2 poop so I think she may be ready.

But I read the 3day PT book and I don't agree with everything in it and I believe the author when she says if you dont' do it 100% it won't work so I don't want to use the method.

I was kinda planning on reading some books with her maybe watching a video, then just keeping her outside in panties and a tshirt as much as possible with a potty chair in the garage to wisk her away to if she starts peeing on herself.  and m&m's for success.  plus probably pull ups if we need ot go out and for naps and bedtime.

Do I need a method? Should I look for another book or something.  Anyone had success with a more laid back approach, or some other different method of PT?

Please share, thanks

  • We haven't decided how we'll do it, but we're starting soon! Dr. Sears has a much more laid back, child led approach in his book. He might have a potty training book, but I'm using the potty training chapter in "The Baby Book". He has a slow approach and a quicker one, similar to the 3-day but again - more child led.

Again, I haven't decided how quickly we'll go. I want to start putting her in underwear so she has a better understanding of "wet" and "dirty", but I might not sit next to her for three days straight!

  • We're not really following any method.  DS has been sitting on the potty for months, and has been peeing in it for awhile now too.  He's pooped in it a few times.  We just kindof go with the flow, asking him to go potty at appropriate times, or whenever he wants.  Lots of praise when he does, and last week started with the M&M's.  They sit him on the potty every hour at daycare, and within the last few weeks he's started going every time, and has started having some dry diapers.  So next week we are going to send him to daycare in underwear and see how it goes.  If he's still having alot of accidents after a few days we'll go back to diapers.  Maybe that makes me lazy, or maybe that makes him lazy, but that's what we're doing and it works for us.  Personally, I think the 3 day cold turkey thing is a bit harsh, but whatever.

  • We're not really following a method either. We've had a potty in her bathroom for a year just to get her familiar with it. 6 months ago she started showing more definite signs of interest but she was also adjusting to the new baby in the house so we didn't push anything. She just moved up to the older toddler room at daycare and has gone for them fairly consistently. We bought a Caillou potty book because she worships Caillou. That seemed to spark her interest a little more too. So, over Memorial Day weekend we put a lot more energy into it and put her in training pants except for naps and nighttime. She's done great. We just put her on the potty every 30 min to hour. She'll go on her potty and regular toilets. The slow method is working for us. It might be working because we're being consistent with daycare. This is day 6 for us and she's had 3 days of no accidents and the other days a max of 2 accidents. She's also had dry diapers after naps sometimes. Anyway, that's what we're doing. We haven't needed m&ms or other treats yet - you never know what we might need to do, but so far we haven't needed incentives like that.
  • I don't have a method, but DD is the one leading the charge. She decided last week she only wanted to pee and poop in the toilet, so I just listen to her when she tells me. I prompt sometimes if she hasn't told me she has to go to the bathroom in a while. We use pull-ups when we're out and about, but the last few days they have been completely dry. For some weird reason, however, when I put underwear on her last night, she freaked out and peed all over the kitchen floor. I am just trying to have lots of patience. There are many times she tells me she has to go to the bathroom and nothing happens. Then she tells me again 5 or 10 minutes later and sometimes we'll go to the bathroom 3 or 4 times in a row before she actually pees or poops. I hear this is normal and have no idea how to change it. I feel like we're doing pretty well so far.
