do i have to put EVERYTHING on the dining table?? toddler mommies?

or build shelves around the house?

these sweet little girls are a handful!  at nap time we wind down in the living room and i literally have to put every toy out of reach.  they take turns running away from me, and i swear they are working together and plotting against me.

anyone put a superyard XT thing in their living room?

  • I just answered a question yesterday on the toddler board regarding Superyards.  Here is the link:

    https://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/37555888.aspx

Our family room looks like a daycare center - we took out the coffee table and we gated the tv.  We also have a gate on the entrance to that room so they can't get out and everything in there is safe.  That is where they spend 99% of their time when we are at home.

My mom's house is set up as a kitchen/family room combined and I bring the superyard when I visit and I gate off the hard stuff.  They do remove all items from their low tables.

My sister never removed anything and her kids learned to avoid the stuff on the tables.  Even though it is annoying, we would rather just remove it and not worry about it.

Yep, the Superyard is a mainstay in our living area (one big room with kitchen, dining room, den, etc....sounds weird, but it works).  We used it a lot more when the girls were younger, but now I leave them out without constant supervision (meaning me in the same room not on top of them) since I have a general sense of what they will do.  They'll still get into things, but I at least know what to expect and where the problem areas may be.  I tend to use the Superyard more when I need to leave the room like to take a shower or do laundry or get something in the basement.

  • Our living room looks like a day care, too! We used to have a Superyard up in one corner. Now instead we have the living room gated off on both sides, and we used Superyard panels to block access to the entertainment center and also the corner with the cable box, Vonage box, etc.

For winding down, I would consider trying to do it in a room that's not full of toys though if possible. (Our boys still have access to their own toys when we're in the living room.)

  • yep, we have a superyard in the family room.   If one of us is right there, we'll open up one side of it so DD can roam the room, and we gate off the door to the kitchen if we don't feel like chasing her around the whole house.    If I need to shower or let out the dog or something, I cage her up in the superyard with her bins of books and toys.
  • We have created a superyard situation off of our living room in what use to be the office.  It looks like a daycare center in there but I know that I can put them in there and not worry.  James is rolling all over creation and we have hardwood floors so I want to keep him confined to a carpeted area.

i might have to start doing this... bring them into the nursery for stories, diaper changes, my horrible singing, and then carry one baby out, who naps in a PNP in my room.

the nursery is fairly safe at this point.  they don't open drawers yet.

    omalley, thanks for the link.

i am not happy about this!  my house is small.  when you open the front door, there you are in the living room & dining room.  i have tried to maintain some semblance of order, and i guess i need to let go a little more!

right now we have coffee table w/bumper, kitchen entry has a gate, and cabinet locks in danger zones.  guess we have some work to do.  especially blocking the LCD tv.  it's stable for now, but they love to climb up and hit the screen.

  • Yes-at that stage we had the superyard blocking off the tv area and gates at all the stairways. Safety locks on all the cabinet doors/fireplace doors. It did kind of look like a daycare, but it's only for a short time and makes life so much easier!!
