Two Under 2

Your thoughts on age difference

When I mention to Moms that we're going to try and have two under two I'm always told how much they love it.  They'll then comment on their specific spacing.  The other day my coworker said how glad she was that DD was 18 months when DS was born because she wasn't jealous.  I've had a friend sing the praises for having them 21 months apart.  We aren't trying for any particular spacing, just hoping we might get lucky and get 2 under 2 or somewhere close to that.  I just find the comments on the age spacing interesting as the only thing I know is what an 8 month old is like.

What are your thoughts on the age difference between your 2 under 2?

Re: Your thoughts on age difference

  • I am really excited that they will be 18 months apart. My brother and I are 18 months apart and very close and DH and his youngest brother are also 18 months and best friends. DH is one of 5 kids and closest with his youngest brother. Growing up we had the same friends and always had someone to play with. It's funny to think my bro would play barbies with me and I would play GI Joe with him but it was so fun.

  • Everyone will basically say they love the age difference between their children and wouldn't have it any other way. Some with kids as close as mine may wish to have them a little later...but I LOVE this spacing. It was great for being pregnant - DS was still taking three long naps during my first trimester. And he was still taking two long naps when we brought the baby home. He doesn't "get" jealousy and just went about like nothing had changed.
  • Yeah, you'll most likely hear the benefits of every span.

#1 and #2 are 16 months apart, which I love.  DS#1 was still young enough when baby got here that he couldn't have cared less about him.  I never had to protect the baby, and by the time DS#1 did notice and care, DS#2 was sturdy enough that it wasn't nearly as scary.  DS#1 was still very dependent on me, which seems like it would be hard but I think it was actually much easier.  He wasn't climbing all over everything and getting into trouble.

DS#2 and DS#3 will be 22 months apart, and I'm a little more worried about that spacing.  DS#2 will totally smother the baby (he was so in love with a baby I held the other day), and will want to play with him.  He also is at the age where he's more independent and thinks he's big, which means I have to watch him much closer.

As far as when they are older, I think it all comes out about the same.  I really wanted my first 2 to be 1 year apart in school, but they will miss it by a couple weeks so they'll be 2 years apart.  And even though #2 and #3 are 22 months apart, they'll be 1 year apart in school.  I think they'll all be close enough in age that they'll share the same interests and friends and whatever else....   And when they are 25, 24, and 22, the exact # of months that separates them isn't going to matter.

  • i think people aren't necessarily saying "18 months is the best" or "21 months is the only way to go" - they are saying that in general having them close together is very awesome.

mine are 17mo and i think it's awesome.  in fact, i'm a little sad that if i were to get pg now, they would be closer to 2yrs apart than 1.5yrs.  but like you said, that's all i know so that's why i want them close together.  anything less than 14mo scares me, but it's more the fear of the unknown.  anything over 21mo is sad to me for really no reason other than it seems so spaced apart. lol

  • depends on your kids. I think DS is going through major separation and jealousy right now. He is not even 18 months. I am nervous. Sometimes I think my friend who has them 12 months apart did it right bc I know DS wouldnt have been jealous at that age...BUT there are ups and downs to every gap.

We plan on having the next one 2-3 years apart from DD (we dont want 3 kids back to back in college) Im sure there will be plusses and minuses to that as well.

GL! we were TTC and got pregnant very fast, I thought I would get pg after DS's 1st bday and have them like 22-24 mo apart....God gave us what we needed and apparently that is a DD 18 months younger than DS. =)

I love that you remember playing with each others toys. DS and DD do this now and I am just hoping that it continues. DS plays baby dolls with DD and she plays cars and trucks with him. I love watching them together.

To the OP mine are 17 months apart and I love it. I agree with others that DS was young enough that he didn't really notice the change or so any jealously when DD was born. He was also very gentle with her and has always loved to help take care of her.

  • From what I've heard, people tend to love whatever they did. I am really liking them close together now, though I wouldn't want another one so soon. That would be too much. Mine are 14.5 months apart.
