Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When did your baby sit up on his/her own?

I know my son is only 4.5 months, but am just wondering. :)

When did he/she sit up unassisted and crawl? I've heard that boys develop later than girls. Any truth to that?

My DS hates the Bumbo seat! He doesn't mind sitting on my lap, and is getting better with his head control. When he does tummy time he is now kicking his legs and getting up on his knees and toes. I love watching him learn new things!

Re: When did your baby sit up on his/her own?

  • Not sure if it is always true about boys sitting up 1st, but it was true for us.

DS sat up on his own (tripod) at 6 months exactly.  It took DD another week to do it - after they sat tripod for about a week they were sitting on their own upright (with a few wobbles here and there)

DS is starting to crawl, DD is not interested in it - they are 9 months old today.

  • Leighton started sitting up probably about 1.5 months ago, but not for long periods of time...now she sits up on her own for a long time.  She is not crawling yet, but she does get up on her knees and rock, so I expect it any day now
  • My son sat unassisted at 5 months 1 week, which I think is kinda early. That said, he's still not a very good roller and has NEVER rolled from back to tummy! So he did things in a funny order. Not crawling yet, not even close.

  • DD sat unassisted right before 6 months...

she just started to take a very small interest in crawling but she really army crawls the best. shes more interested in walking then anything she started pulling herself up around 7.5 months.

I have heard that boys develop later but im not sure if thats true or not.

    This is my child exactly!

  • A week or so before 6 months!
  • DS started to sit unassisted for 10-20 seconds at 5.5 months.  He was at a point where I could sit him down and walk away at about a week after 6 months.

Still no crawling and I don't think we're anywhere close.  He hates his tummy and instantly rolls over every time we set him down.  I don't think he'll learn to crawl that way!

He could sit up for a few seconds at a time at 5 1/2 months, then suddenly
at 6 mos on the dot he could stay up for a long time on his own.

I think sitting has been the coolest milestone so far, besides his first smiles.

This was Katie sitting up for the first time.  It was taken on May 2nd, one month ago today.  So she was 6.5 months old.

  • Do you think the Bumbo seat helped at all? Did you use it much?
  • DD is just now starting to sit by herself and she's still trying to learn that she can't throw herself sideways and backwards.  She rolls all over now but she's not even close to crawling.  She's concentrating on fine motor skills... she's waving, self feeding, holding her bottle and sippy cups, manipulating toys, passing them back and forth, etc.  She doesn't care about the bigger physical stuff at the moment.

  • DD is just now starting to sit on her own, and it's not for a very long time.  She falls over after a few minutes!

DD started sitting up on her own around 5.5 months.  She isn't exactly crawling.  She will get up on all fours and move forward a few paces but ends up on her belly scooting across the floor.

  • DD never did the tripod thing. One day she just started sitting up on her own with no help/support. It was at 5 months 1 day
