Putting LO in the car when it's hot

Do you cool off the car first (open windows or put on a/c for a few minutes) or do you just put LO in the car, then get in and quickly turn on the a/c?

Re: Putting LO in the car when it's hot

  • I am pretty paranoid about this- in Texas they are already saying it will be in the 100s this weekend- HOT!

Anyhow- DS is getting front door service haha! (my daycare is in my office building)  I try to park in the shade with windows cracked- then after work- I go and get the car- turn AC on full blast- then go back in and grab DS- it's usually still a little warm/hot when I put him in- but at least it doens't take very much longer for it to cool down.

  • I have an automatic starter so I plan on cooling the car down the same way I warm the car up in the winter

  • Stella already seems hot natured to me and starts to sweat minutes after getting in her car seat, so if we are home and planning on going somewhere I go out and start the car and let the A/C run for about 5-10 minutes before I put her in the car.  When I am working and pick her up from daycare the car is already cooled down because its about a 20 minute drive from my work.

I'm so jealous! I keep telling DH I want one so I can start my truck from upstairs in my office building when it's 115 degrees in the summer.

My truck is cool when I get the kids after work because I've already driven 5 miles to the daycare. But, other times, I try and park in the shade when we go to the store, etc. If we are leaving the house for the first time that day I go out and roll the windows down and start the car then go back in and put DD in her car seat and tell DS to get his shoes on. It's usually pretty cool by the time we get in.

  • I put LO in the car and start the engine quickly. I have extra tinting on the windows to keep the sun off him and put a shade in the windshield when my car is parked to keep it from getting so hot. Parking in the shade helps, but there is no shade at my office or the daycare.

While we're driving, I turn the a/c on higher than I would if it were just me in the car, and point the vents so they can hopefully reach the backseat. My a/c can make the front seat frigid, but has trouble cooling the backseat.

  • I'm in Texas, and its hot.  I start my truck 10-15 minutes before I need to go somewhere and turn the AC all the way up.  I feel horrible about wasting the gas, but what can I do?  DS is very heat sensitive with his helmet.

Here's a tip I learned about from my helmet clinician.  Buy a couple of extra ice packs.  When you are out and about, put the ice pack on the car seat and throw a heavy blanket overtop.  I have  the flexible blue ice packs made by rubbermaid.  They were only a few dollars each at Target, and they conform to the car seat really well. I keep a cooler bag in the back seat for my groceries anyways, so I just throw them in there whenever we leave.

  • I'll start the car a few minutes before hand if I can, but usually I just put her in the car and get it started right away. I'm in AL and it's already smokin down here. But my AC cools my car off fast, so I think we're good.
  • We start the car first, unless we don't have a choice (e.g. we're in a hurry/emergency).

We don't get 100 degree weather often, but we've had 80 degree lately and we made a big point of cooling the car first.

  • It hasn't been that hot where I live yet, but if I've been at the store or the car out in the sun, I usually turn it on and crank up the air while I'm loading whatever I need to into the car and then put DS in it.  If we're at home the car is in the garage so it doesn't get outrageously hot.
  • I've heard its better to let the car air out by opening the windows first... then turn on the AC. There are a lot of harmful chemicals in the air from the heat & plastic in the car.

We got a new car when I had DD (my saturn was too small) and I was SOOOOO excited about the feature.  You should have one installed :)

  • AC on first. I turn the car on and let it cool off while I get LO in his carseat and grab our bags etc. I live in OK though so it gets really hot here.
  • I usually put DS in the car and open all the doors and turn on the a/c.  The vents are right overtop of DS and my suv cools super quick.

It hasn't been too hot here yet (CA weather decided it was winter again last week, actually had DS in a sweater!) but I usually have a crap load of stuff to haul, so I open all the doors, load my crap, and then put DS in.  We'll see how well that works once it hits 100 here!
