Job hunting question

Aside from Monster and other online sources, how do you find jobs?  I don't know many people IRL so that's not an option really.  I'm looking for work but I have no idea how to go about!  Other than the military, I have not worked in this country as an adult so I'm pretty much a virgin.  I really to find a job.

Re: Job hunting question

  • I've had luck w/ recruiters/headhunters.  The ones I've used specialize in Acc/Fin, otherwise I'd recommend them to you in a heartbeat.  You can always search for recruiters in your line of work.  Maybe temp agencies?  They sometimes offer temp to perm jobs.

  • I should add that I'm basically looking for admin/clerical work.  It would have to be part time during the the fall and spring semesters.
  • Does your school offer help with job placement?  Usually, student services can help you find a job or they usually have flyers/letters from employers looking for students.  You can also try to apply at the school for a job.  My first two jobs were at the university I was attending.

  • Adri has a great point!  Try finding employment on campus.  I also worked on campus during the end of undergrad, and through grad school.  They were very flexible w/ me about going to class during the day.  I always met my hours.  Plus, they would always let me take days off during midterms/finals for studying/projects.

And if you can manage a full time job, hello benefits!  Free tuition!  : )

  • You can always start with a temp agency. In this economy, many companies are using temps, especially for admin work, until they are able to hire a full-time position. In many cases, temp jobs turn into permanent positions. Good luck!
  • I love the, "pretty much a virgin."

I would start with what you want to do or what you have done and try google. Or check into local businesses. That is how I got the job here. I liked the proximity to Homestead and looked them up on the internet to see what openings they had that I would fit into. I have also tried recruiting firms but never had much luck with them or with Monster. I have gotten a lot of luck from searching on my own and/or word of mouth.

Email me when you get a sec.

  • Believe it or not, Craigslist also has postings.  I actually got an interview through an application I submitted for a posting on there.

  • I got my current job through a staffing agency that staffs law firms. Would you be interested/qualified to work at a law firm? If so, I can send you her contact info. Let me know!
