Ques for those who have bike trailers...

So we have been anxiously looking forward to getting a bike trailer to pull DS in so we can go on family bike rides and finally did so today.  One problem though, with how the the bike trailer connects to the bike, both my husband and I hit our heels on the bike trailer when pedaling.  If we consciously move our foot up farther on the pedal it's OK but then we are pedaling with the arch/heel of our foot which is not going to be comfortable for a long ride. Have any of you ladies dealt with this problem?  Any solutions other than returning it and trying out a different kind?

  • Are you sure it's installed properly? You shouldnt be making contact with the attachment... What brand is it?

  • Hmmm ditto EmMad, are you sure it's installed correctly?

Even if I had wookie feet they still wouldn't come close to hitting where the trailer is attached.

    BWAHAHAHAH!!!! Wookie Feet!

  • It's called the Xterra Deluxe Bicycle Trailer and Jogger, it's being sold by Costco right now.  It's different from several bike trailers that we looked at in that it clamps on to the lowest most/rear bar on the bike itself as opposed to the bike axel at the hub like most bicycle trailers.  It looked appealing in that it's easy to clamp and un-clamp the trailer and switch it from one bike to another but with the way it's set-up there is no way to move it back any farther and both of our heels clip it when pedaling on both of our bikes.  We are going to call the company in the morning and see if they have any suggestions otherwise I think we'll be returning it and buying one that attaches to the bike axle to avoid this problem.

  • From the picture you linked to the attachment looks the same as ours (different brand) and we've never had the problem you described the few times we have used ours. It clamps on to the support bar that extends directly backward from the pedal.

There is a not-too-helpful picture in this link.

Good luck! We had ours out this weekend and DS loves it.

Yah, that does look like the same type of attachment mechanism.  Hmm... methinks DH and I must just have abnormally large feet!  Well, we'll see what the company says in the morning when I call them, it appears after a lot of research online that we we may be able to convert it to a more standard hub-mounted attachment which would definitely get it out of the way. Thanks for sharing your experience, I am relieved to know this isn't the norm for bike trailers because that would be really annoying.

  • we havve the axle - attached kind  and just bought an extra "hub" thing so it is easy to attach to both our bikes.  It just take a pin & hook to get it on the hub so it is not a big deal.
