Re: Flying with infant

  • I'm not much help b/c I have no clue what the rules are on formula other (I think) than that you are allowed to bring at least one prepared bottle.  But I wanted to say that if you can nurse during the flight and if your kid is cooperative, you may have a good flight.  When each of my kids was young enough to nurse on a plane, those were the easiest flights for us!  I just latched the kid on and away we went, with the baby sleeping a lot of the flight.  I especially tried to get him/her to latch on just before takeoff and landing.  Most of the time it worked.  Hope you have a good trip!!

  • American may not have rules about travelling with formula - usually the restrictions are just the current TSA guidelines: https://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

I've been able to fly with at least one or two 8 oz bottles of milk and water when I've said that it's to make formula without any issues.  There have been times when my cool packs have been confiscated, so eventually we just started filling extra bottles with ice instead and that was never a problem.  Powdered formula should be fine since it's not a liquid or gel, so there's no restriction on having it as a carry on.  I never took a tub because I had received a bunch of samples of the single serve packs and they were very useful for traveling.  If they won't let you take bottles of water through, then flight attendants are usually nice about providing water when you need to mix formula.

  • We flew with DD when she was 6 weeks old and had no problems with any of our stuff. We brought in tons of individual packets of formula-enfamil, bottled water, pumped BM and I also BF while traveling. Our cool packs went through just fine but we also had ice in DD's bottles because she loved cold bottles. You can always purchase bottle water once through security or get it from the flight attendants once on board. Try to be prepared just incase you get a crabby security person but in my past experience, if you tell them it's for your new baby, they all seem to be pretty flexible and willing to help.

  • I have never flown American, but I have flown with DD a lot since she was born.  I don't believe that it is the airline that sets the restrictions, but instead TSA.  TSA allows you to take as much formula or BM as you think you will need for the duration of the trip.

When I pumped and we were going on a short trip I would bring a few bottles of BM in my Medela cooler (I never had a problem getting my ice packs through security, but I did read on the bump once about a girl who had hers confiscated as she went through TSA because they are frozen liquids/gels).  I would also fill my formula dispenser with powder and carry an empty bottle so I could get some water and make a bottle if I needed to.  A lot of the time they would test my BM as I went through security, but if you made a big deal about it being BM, the less they wanted to bother you.

When we were on exclusively formula, I always brought a few premade bottles.  They are ridiculously expensive, like $11 for a pack of 6 or 8 bottles, but so easy to travel with.  I would pack a bunch of those along with my bottles and we were good.  Of course, TSA always wanted to test my formula meaning I had to open a bottle, but it wasn't awful.  They never restricted how much dry formula a brought on.  Once I had to pack a whole container of Similac (23 oz) and no one said anything - normally just brought my full formula dispenser instead because it was so much easier.

    Have a good trip!

  • I just came back from a 5 day trip today and didn't have a problem at all. On our flight out I had 2 bottles of BM, one of water and a couple of babyfood jars. When I went through security they made me open the milk and water and put some device over it (had no clue what it was) but they were nice about it and didn't touch anything just had me open everything.  Today on the way back had 3 milk because had plenty after pumping, 1 water 2 babyfood jars and they just let me through no questions asked....
