RP: Leave pump at the office?

I am getting the Medela PISA.  It looks like it comes with a little insulated bag.  Can I leave the big tote part at work and just carry home the breastmilk in the insulated bag?  Or will I need the pump at home?  (This assume I can wash the pump parts out at work...)

I have the Medela PISA.  I always take mine home.  I guess it depends if you think you will be needing it to pump at home.

  • I just bought another one and I am going to leave one in the office.  As most all of you, we have enough to carry - lunch, laptop, BM, purse, etc.
  • I carted mine back and forth and am expecting to need to again.  With DD until she was almost weaned and was taking relatively little BM during the day, I had to do a little auxiliary pumping now and again in the evening and on the weekends to make sure she had enough.  If it wasn't for that, I'd leave it at work once I had a freezer stash for emergencies.

The only reason I take mine home is if something were to happen, like I'd get the flu overnight and send DS to daycare and I was home all day alone.  I've never had it happen, but I'd hate to be home with no way to express.

I carried mine back & forth from home to work for a long time, "just in case", then I got smart and bought a little manual hand pump ($30) to keep at home, so I can leave the PISA at work.  Works great for me, I use the manual occasionally to relieve engorgement or something.

I would do a morning pump before work, so I needed it back and forth.  This time, I'm not sure what I'll do.  It was a PITA carrying it around, esp with a laptop and purse (and sometimes coffee!).  But I'd still need to carry the milk and pump parts home for washing, so it wouldn't necessarily lighten my load to leave the pump behind.
  • I left mine at the office for a year!  I just brought the insulated bag home with the bottles and washed the pump parts at work.  I have my own office with a door that locks and it was never a problem.  Oh, and I had a manual pump at home for the few times I needed it.
  • I lugged mine to and from work every day. But I EP'd. If you can BF and have a safe place to store it at work I don't see a problem with it!

  • I leave mine at work and just carry the little cooler and bottles and hookups back and forth.  I steam clean them every night.  With DC #1 I carried the pump back and forth becuase I'd occasionally pump in the evenings, but I don't do that with DC #2, so no need to have the pump at home.  I hvae a manual pump thing that came with my pump, so I have that if there's an emergency of some sort.
