We are already in contact with ECI and are starting the program in a couple of weeks, but I am a little frustrated after doctors and daycare pushing this program and all we get is 2 hrs worth of visits a month.
I have never taken him to a My Little Gym or anything like that, but does anyone here think that might be beneficial? He is just lazy so I know that no amount of pushing on my part will help but I am wondering if a gym like that might encourage him.
I also have my doubts a stranger from ECI can help either with one hour a month for development.
Re: Not walking at 18 months
Has the Dr checked his ears? Is he talking? Reason I ask is because my oldest wasn't talking or walking at 19 months. I took him to 4 different Drs and they all said he was lazy. I knew he wasn't lazy and took him to a 5th Dr. This one actually looked in his ears this time. Something wasn't right so they sent us to an ENT. He ended up having a set of tubes put in his ears and when they did that all this fluid came out. Because of the fluid in his ears he had no balance to walk and everything was muffled so was deaf and couldn't talk. He started walking the very next day.
I understand being frustrated that you only get 2 hours a month with ECI, but I can tell you that we had an excellent experience with them. My son received physical therapy and speech therapy. He was with them from 15 months until he aged out at 3 years old. We saw great progress. His speech issues were severe though and continued with a speech program until this year and he is 5 now.
And I totally get your concerns that a complete stranger will be able to help and let me just tell you...kids act differently in front of other people that are not their parents, even at 18 months old. My kids all behave, listen and follow directions for other people...be it Grandma, Aunt or one of their friend's moms. You may be surprised at how cooperative your DS is with the physical therapist.
And I get that you think your son is just lazy and that's why he's not walking...but maybe there really is something there. Have a little faith in him. Don't give up on him. Just let ECI do their job. Kids his age don't not walk because their lazy, he may have low muscle tone or he cannot balance. You just never know.
Good luck to your son.
They check his ears every appt. He hasn't had an ear infection since he was like 9 months old. He does babble and say a few words.
I am only kidding about the being lazy. He is also a big kid (30 lbs, 31 inches) and didn't crawl til he was 12 months old. Late bloomer.
You may get more depending on his assessment. My son was seen for 1 hour a week at the beginning. Plus, they give you exercises and information to work on in-between visits.
I had late walkers myself. Keegan was at 17 months and Brady was almost 19.
