I had a deep clean done once. I sat on the couch the entire time and did stuff on the computer. When she needed to clean the room with the couch in it, I moved to the kitchen.
If you don't know the person, I would stay -- at least the first time...they are usually very trustworthy because they want repeat business -- I've never had anyone steal from me and we used different cleaning companies (and left a few alone)
It's awkward to stay - just a warning - you (or at least I) feel like I should be helping in some way instead of watching tv or playing online...but, DON'T -- that's why you hired them!!!
We use a lady now that my mom has been using for about 8 years - she has a key and our alarm code...
i think your expected to leave. im not sure though. the only time someone has cleaned my house is when we get posted to a new base and the cleaners come after everything has been moved out. im the type of person that if someone was coming to clean my house.. i would tidy up first lol.. im so OCD its not even funny.
In college, I worked as a home/office cleaner for 2 different regular contract clients and neither of them stayed while I cleaned. A couple of times, we had one time clients and usually someone would stay in the house and just like, watch tv or read or something while we cleaned. Whatever you are comfortable with is fine.
We just hired a lady used by other people in our complex and I stayed the first time, but the second time I got out. The smells were too much for me. I stayed on the patio for most of the first time, and just left for the second time. I love walking in the door and the place is spotless!

I stayed the first few times and just migrated rooms NOW she only comes once a month to deep clean my up keep but in a few weeks Im going to have her every other week to do floors and bathrooms too. I have actually gotten to know her pretty well and like her a lot
We have a regular cleaning person and generally I prefer to not be around when they come, though sometimes I am just because of scheduling. Yes I feel a little lazy if I'm home while they're cleaning; yes, the smells can be a but intense; also, just hearing them cleaning can sometime be a little nerve wracking when you're not the one doing it - violent/loud sounds and you don't see what they are.
So nice to just come home to a house that is magically clean!
I have them do my bedroom last and just stay in there. When they are ready for my bedroom, i go to my family room and watch tv on the couch, or get a bite to eat in the kitchen
My mom cleans houses and she's had the same clients for 10+ years, so they leave the house when they have to run errands. Honestly, if I don't know the person, I would not leave them alone in the house with my stuff. It's just hard to trust people anymore these days. You just hang out, let her do everything.
We leave and go have lunch or run errands when she comes. I don't like being there. It makes me feel guilty to have someone clean my house while I just sit there. PG or not.
The lady that I have come clean every now and then prefers if I'm not home, and personally I prefer it that way too. That being said I did stay the first couple times... If you/your mom don't know the person, I would stay.

We have our house cleaned once a week. We're not home, but others do. It's what ever you are comfy with. It may be better you for you to be there to make sure they do everything you are expecting.
i have a regular bi-weekly service. sometimes i'm there, sometimes i'm not. i'm always there for the first few cleanings with a new service. usually, it's on a weekday so i'm working anyway. i just move to a different room/floor when i'm in the way.
what a great gift!

Double what you would pay for a regular clean (usually)
thanks guys. i think i'll just take Charlie outside and play in the yard. hopefully it won't rain.
and to the PP who asked- this woman is charging us 120 for deep cleaning of a 1400 sq ft house. but she's the friend of my uncle.
