We are in diaper rash hell! Suggestions?

DS has a horrible painful diaper rash.  We have used Boudreaux's, Desitin, and Balmex, nothing seems to help.  I took him to the pedi last Friday and they said to call back if its not gone in a week.

We've also tried baking soda in his bath water.  I can't even change his diapers because it is so painful.  Poor little guy shakes all over and screams b/c the pain is so bad :(

What can I do between now and Friday to stop the pain?

This is all thanks to the little girl who told me she felt like she was going to "frow up" so she didn't go to school, but her Mom brought her to the park to play anyways.  DS got diarrhea the next day.

  • I"d take him back to the pedi if he's in that much pain! Poor baby!

  • We are using a calimine based cream. Someone on EFF suggested it and it cleared up Jack's (open, nasty, spreading) rash pretty quick. It is something like calimiphene (it is in his room, he is sleeping). You have to ask for it at the pharmacy counter, it is about $7.50 for a giant tube. It worked so quick.
  • butt paste and at times let it air out by letting him be nekked.  Also, never rub it when cleaning, only patt it.  Also, with my LO any juice heavily worsens it and some acidic fruits.  I'd lay off those until it passes.  GL!
  • Have you tried aquaphor too?  It works for us over everything else I've tried (butt paste, desitin, a&d, balmex, etc).

  • Pinxav is the hands down best stuff.  Slather it on with each diaper change and only wipe when there is poo.
  • I would definately try calling the doctor.  Something that worked for us was called Pinx Salve.  My SIL told me about it.  I don't know if it is a regional product but I had to ask for it behind the pharmacy counter.  It did work great for us the one time we had an awful diaper rash.
  • DD just got over a stomach virus and her diaper rash was pretty bad.

She wouldn't let me get near her w/the Desitin and I was not brave enough to let her run around naked to let it air out... Eventually she got to a point where she wouldn't even let me use a wipe on her unless she had a poopy diaper.

The only thing that worked for me was to keep her body cook (we did lots of cool plain water baths in the tub, with just her usual Aveeno oatmeal bath soap to cleanse. I didn't even put it on that area... Just on her tummy and back and when I rinsed it sort of ran over the area), and to not feed her anything acidic until her tummy healed. It is totally gone now, w/out using any Desitin. It did take a few days, so if you are brave enough to wait it out, i'd try that.

Reading the ingredients, it is pretty much the stuff I was talking about only a brand name (mine is generic). It worked very well!

  • We are in the same boat. Her butt is actually bleeding in a few places it's soo bad. DH is a pharmacist and is bringing home Calmoseptine tonight. They use it for bed sores and stuff so we're hoping it works.
  • I remember someone bringing this up before, and a few people suggested going to a compounding pharmacy. They said they needed something for severe diaper rash, whatever it is that they made people raved about. Sorry couldn't be of more help. Go luck!

  • Are you positive it's a diaper rash? I only ask because we were just there. We tried EVERYTHING. Even 30 dollar triple paste. The doc even told us it was just a diaper rash.  Well I pushed and pushed because I knew something wasn't right.  It ended up being Impetigo which is a bacterial infection.  Got a RX and FINALLY it is going away.  Butt rashed are terrible.  Poor baby.  Good luck finding something that works!
  • Poor baby.  Triple Paste does a good job.  Also, if it's in the folds of his legs and on his testicles/penis, it could be yeast- use gynelotrimin.
  • If you are sure its not yeasty, throw some corn starch or flour in a skillet and cook it.  Let it cool and put it on his bum.  If you have a cast iron skillet, use that.

I know it sounds crazy, but it works.  I work in a nursing home and was talking about a terrible diaper rash that dd had.  One of my patients told me this and it worked like a charm.  She had 11 kids and used it on all of them, so I thought it was worth a shot!

  • Thanks for all the help!!!  This may be dumb, but how do I tell if its yeast vs. diaper rash?

  • I swear by Calmoseptine. You can read reviews on amazon too but I pretty much promise this stuff is amazing. It was rec by my pedi and it's the only cream we use know. It has many uses but clearing up diaper rash/dairrhea rash is one of them.  It's found in the pharmacy area at the drugstore or supermarket.

That is the stuff we used!! I could not think of the name for the life of me. THanks!

According to dd's dermatologist, yeast is when the rash is red and bumpy like bad acne. We recently were in the same situation - the shaking and trembling when I tried to put her on the table. I know this topic is played out, but turns out it was the pampers dry-max. DH ran out to get diapers and accidentally brought home the wrong ones. (ie., not dry-max) the rash was gone in 12 hrs and hasn't been back since. Totally feel your pain. GL!

  • I tell everyone to use DRC (stands for diaper rash cream) it's sold at CVS at the Pharmacy counter. It's amazing. Clears up nearly any/every diaper rash w/ in 24 hours. It's about $7 a tube.

  • We've had the same issue, and were just at the pedi's yesterday for it. We got a compounded cream that is a combo of hydrocortisone and a cream that fights yeast infections - it's already working. That, and covering the rash with Ihle's Paste (look for it in the first aid section).

Also, we make sure just to use wet, soft paper towel instead of wipes whenever his skin is irritated. The wipes make it so much worse!

     Good luck!

  • We had to stop using baby wipes and used washcloths with warm water, gently patting her bum to clean it off. It really helped - even though we use sensitive wipes, they still hurt her bum. I found the baby washcloths worked best.

  • My son gets rashes that are like that and my pediatrician said they are yeast based. She recommended we make our own diaper spackle (that's what she called it). It's a mixture of Desitin Creamy (I used the Target generic that had identical ingredients), miconozale (a women's yeast infection cream found in the women's product section), and Benadryl cream. Just mix them together into a thick paste, you can heat up the Desitin if it is too thick to mix well so it thins out a bit. After it cools you plaster it on in a thick coat. My son didn't cry when I put this on him. The pedi said the Benadryl cream will work to take away the inflammation and immediate pain, while the miconozole will treat the yeast. The Desitin Creamy is just the base really. It works wonders for my boy.

  • Neosporin - clears up painful, raw diaper rash overnight
  • DD has sensitive skin and had terrible diaper rash as a newborn - red, bleeding, etc. We spend hundreds of dollars on diaper rash cream, including every organic kind at whole foods. The one that finally worked was called Angel Baby Bottom Balm - the bleeding stopped within 1 diaper change, and the rash was gone within a day. I seriously could not believe it. We also switched to cloth diapers since they breathe a little more and don't have chemicals that irritate her skin. If the rash persists, maybe you could put him in prefolds for a while? It's sort of a middle ground between diaperless and disposables. We live in an apartment in the city, so diaperless isn't really an option for us - if you have a yard, diaperless in the backyard is another great option!
  • Maximum strength desitin, maalox, and a&d ointment.  Mix equal parts.  Apply it like you are frosting a cake.  I have even used a small spatula to get a good glop in before I spread it over her.  Also, try to give him as much air as you can...just letting him be naked!

Our dd gets bleeding open soar diaper rashes with every tooth!  This stuff works amazing!

  • DD had a horrible diaper rash as a result of being sick, getting a yeast infection and being on meds. It was awful. Our pedi told us to mix equal parts aquaphor (sp?) and maalox and apply that to the diaper rash area. I have to admit I thought she was off her rocker.... but it worked in about a day and a half.

  • SFL - DD has also gotten these types of rashes when teething, so I'll definitely use some of these suggestions.  Poor kiddo's!

this stuff is awesome, it cleared b up real quick.
  • The only thing that I found was not extremely painful for my son, and seemed to help a tiny bit, was a bottle of that Evian spray that I kept in the fridge and then used to spray his butt.  Although, you don't need to buy that spray.  You can get a spray bottle of water and stick that in the fridge.  I liked the mistiness of the Evian spray though.  I sprayed him with that, which helped him.  Then make sure to pat instead of rub.  Some Aveeno diaper rash cream slathered on thick will provide a good barrier.  Unfortunately, the rash is not going to fully heal until the diarrhea is gone.

if it is a yeast infection,  you will need an RX like Nystatin ointment.  We use Critic-Aid Barrier Paste and it clears up within a day or less.  It sticks to open wounds.  It is $15 a tube and you can buy it online at americasrxdotcom.  this stuff was used in the NICU at our hospital and we have been sold on it ever since.
  • My DD had a bad diaper rash a month ago and nothing was working.  We tried corn starch baths, corn starch in her diaper, letting her air out, zinc oxide etc.  The only thing that worked was LotriminAF because she had a yeast infection.  It got better within a day and was gone by 5 days.
  • Don't use commercial wipes - they all have alcohol in them. The only ones that don't are the Lansinoh wipes - I can get them at Target.

I did not like Calmoseptine, but I do love Pinxav. And Aquafor. And Nystatin for the yeasty infections. And I would dry her butt with a hairdryer on low to make sure she was completely dry during changes - she liked it!

  • someone please report this vendor!!  ps: pampers is evil. and STILL not taking responsibility for their bad diapers.

@MPSW - I'm Amy and I work for Pampers.  Sorry to intrude but I saw your post and wanted to say I'm glad your DD's rash has cleared up.  My DD used to get awful rashes and it was so hard to see her in pain.  If you could call us at 1-877-256-3265, we'd like to learn more.  Thanks!
