Disney with a 1 year old

DH and I are planning to take DD to Disney (probably Magic Kingdom and Epcot) for the first time this weekend and I was wondering if you have any suggestions.  I know she is still kinda young to really enjoy it, but is there anything you would recommend?  Rides, attractions, or shows she might enjoy?  Anything that we should definitely do or avoid?

We are staying at the Swan in hopes that this will help us for naps - and hopefully get us out of the park for the hottest hours of the day.  Has anyone had luck getting little ones to the hotel to nap and then back to the park?

Also, does anyone know if they sell whole milk in Magic Kingdom or Epcot?  Is it everywhere or only in specific places?

Re: Disney with a 1 year old

  • I'm pretty sure they sell whole milk in the stands but we bought a gallon and just filled some bottles and took that in the park. Be sure to take lots of water (they let you take water, milk, food in the park) and snacks!

We went to Magic Kingdom and did the kiddy section, I think It's a Small World is the biggest hit with the little ones lol. At Epcot they have the Finding Nemo ride which is cool for them too.

  • Ditto Clari.  We took lots of water bottles and boxes of (chocolate-I hate warm regular milk!) milk with us, plus some straws so our 1 year old could drink out of the water bottles.  We did It's a Small World, Peter Pan's Flight, Dumbo, the Carousel, and then she fell asleep in the stroller (which she NEVER does).  We thought, like you, that we would head to the hotel for a nap, but since she napped in the stroller (and then our son napped in it later), we had no need to leave!  We stayed from opening until around 7:30 when we were beat.  We just wandered around and hit whatever struck the kids' interests, starting with It's a Small World.  The 1 year old loved the street parades and shows at the castle.  Could not take her eyes off them!  They sell fresh fruit (grapes, bananas) that are kid/baby-friendly, too, so we bought lunch there (although we did have cheerios and goldfish for them to snack on as well).

    Have fun!

  • We've taken our 1 year old to Disney 3 times and she's loved it every time! At some restaurants/stands they only have low fat milk (or Mickey milk!) I just feed her what they had and don't worry about if it was whole milk or 2%. At some places they do have whole milk, but mostly it was lowfat. We always buy a 1/2 gallon of whole milk and keep it in the hotel mini fridge for mornings and evenings.

We stayed at the Swan during one of our trips and I loved it!  My little one is a good stroller napper when she's exhausted- so usually I have her sleep there vs. going back to the room (for some reason going back to the room seems like more work for me), that being said- we've never taken her in the summer, so going back to the room when it's really hot is probably the best idea.

My baby loves characters- so I always book a few character dinings (at the MK, Crystal Palace is delish!) and we stop at all the character greeting areas! You can also try the restaurant at the swan (can't think of it's name right now)- the food is pretty good and they have different characters every evening! Also- if you have time, Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary is our FAVORITE!

    Have fun!!!!!
