Alabama Babies

I know he's not teething yet but...

he has started putting his fists in his mouth constantly and drooling a lot more...I experimented with a teething ring the other day and he gnawed on it just like he's been doing with his hands...he's not able to hold it yet so I just try to put the ring in his mouth every time I see him gnawing on his hands...he's not super irritable but he's taking longer to settle down...like now for instance, he's been trying to take the same nap for about an hour...he's too sleepy to do anything else but he won't go to sleep...my grandma says he's acting like he's "cutting teeth" already...wdyt?

Re: I know he's not teething yet but...

  • Aubrey started drooling more, gnawing on her hands and anything else we'd put near her mouth, etc sometime around 3 months...we always thought she was acting like she was cutting teeth.  Her actual first two teeth didn't break through until Mother's Day weekend so she was 6 and a half months.

He may be heading towards teething, but the actual teeth may take a while to break through..or it could be sooner.  It's not impossible for 2 month olds to get teeth...my MIL said my BIL got his first teeth at 4 months so you just never know :)

  • Mitchell did the same thing at that age, and there was a lot of drool.  Everybody would always say that he was teething. Low and behold the first sign of a tooth didn't appear until after 9 months old.  Not to say that it isn't possible, because it obviously is, but it could be other things.

Our pedi told us that saliva production picks up significantly around that time and that the babies haven't yet learned how to swallow it like adults do, so out of the mouth it goes.

M has his bottom front teeth now and he's still chewing on things like crazy so I think more are on the way soon.  Anytime he's chewing on something there's crazy drool everywhere!

  • My neice is almost the exact same age and she just started rubbing her gums together and is chewing on her hands too.

I remember M did this around the same time too (maybe a couple of weeks later) and everyone told me at the time "Ohhh it can't be teething, it's too early."  But I don't care whether you call it non-teething, pre-teething, or whatever, for us it was early signs of teething and while he didn't cut his first tooth until 6mos, I'm certain his gums/mouth were hurting him much earlier as a result of his teeth progressing outwards.  Thankfully I also remember that the "pre-teething"/teething wasn't constant...we'd have good weeks/bad weeks.

I'd say if the teething toys help soothe him, go for it!

  • Jake did the exact same thing. His pedi called it pre-teething. He is almost nine months and still doesn't have any teeth. But he still chews on anything in sight.

  • I've heard of baby's being born with teeth so there's really not a "too early" for teeth. I also know an 11 month old that doesn't have a tooth in his head. It's different for everyone!

  • Payton started doing the same thing at 2-3 months.  She's been chewing on anything she can put in her mouth since then.

Our pedi also called it pre-teething.  He did say at her 6 month appointment that her gums were swollen, but he said he would bet that it would be another 2-3 months at least until she got teeth.  We're a week shy of 7 months and they still haven't made an appearance.  Gums are still swollen.  Still as drool-y and chew-y as she was at 2 months.  :)

  • Oh, and as far as the hands in the mouth go -- our pedi also told us that babies using their mouths is a way of exploration.  Their little mouths and tastebuds are more developed than anything else early on, and while they're figuring out how those hands actually work, they're feeling them with their mouths and tasting them and chewing on them, etc.

As he grows and his motor skills improve and he can pick things up with his hands, he'll explore them that way and then they'll go right into the mouth too!

    ;)
