Have a dx finally. Expressive Speech delay and some Apraxia

Jacob will go to speech therapy 2x weekly for 45 minutes.  We went for the eval. last week and he loved it.  New toys, friendly staff, and a bouncy gym to play in.

They think this happened due to him chronic ear infections for the last almost 2 years.  He had tubes put in both ears in April and his tongue clipped.  The therapist seem to think he will be caught up in the next year or so but definitely before Kindergarten, so I feel very fortunate if that's the case.

Anyone else dealing with this?  I'm upset that I didn't push this sooner but I kept getting dismissed and told that I was worrying for no reason for the past year.

Re: Have a dx finally. Expressive Speech delay and some Apraxia

  • Glad to hear you have a diagnosis and a therapy plan.  My son thinks of speech therapy as play time -- and his therapist has some great toys!

My son has apraxia as well -- but his was unrelated to any ear problems or tongue-tie issues.  I've never heard of it being attributed to those causes.  His progress has been very slow, which his therapist tells us is common in apraxia of his level.  He also has muscle tone issues in his mouth, which is another complicating factor.

I pushed to get him evaluated, and got the same dismissive push-back from everyone.  So frustrating, and leads to lingering guilt.  But good for you on pushing through!

  • We have a speech eval set for the 30th of june.. we have waited 4 months for this appt! ds is 2 yrs 9 months and has a vocabulary of about 5 -10 words.. we have had his ears tested as well.. the first appt they said he has fluid in his ears.. then the ped said that he did not so we go back for another hearing test in a few weeks as well.

I really wish this could have all gotten taken care of sooner as well but I was getting dismissed as well.. being told that he will talk soon but it has never happened.. esp when I see 1 1/2 and 2 yr olds with speech its depressing. There is no school district assistance here until 3 yrs old. Very frustrated and stressed out mom over here.

  • We had an EI evaluation when DS was 18 months old.  He didnt talk AT ALL.  Well, he had one word "Coco" which is our dogs name, didnt say Mommy or Papi or even babble.  We werent all too concerned with other delays/disabilities since I used to work heavily with adults with developmental disbilities and he had no signs or markers for anything but his lack of speech was very concerning.  He passed all of his eval with average or above average scores except his expressive speech - he failed miserably :)  We started speech therapy at about 20 months and went for about a year adn he has more than caught up to where he should be - he actually talks MORE than most of the other kids in his Pre-K2 class who are older than him.  He just needed the push of the speech therapist to get it going in the right direction (he has a short tongue and we couldnt BF either).  The best part of speech therapy was the strategies to use at home, I went in to every session and took what she did with him and did all of it at home too....it really helped and I saw major progress very early on in the whole process! GL!

  • I am a developmental specialist for Early On here in MI.  I can confidently say that at least 90% of my caseload is treating kids with an expressive speech delay. It is very common for a few reasons, chronic ear infections is one of them. I can also say that speech therapy twice a week is going to help your LO tremendously. You have done the right thing, by getting him help right now. Just get the information to carry over therapy yourself when you are at home. Remember to instruct others (daycare, family) on what to do to help encourage your LO's language. GL!
