Asthma

We had to take Madi to the Dr late Friday to find out she has Asthma. Not fun! Have any of you experienced anything like this? We are doing breathing treatments every 4 hours, and a steroid 2xs a day. through tomorrow. She has just been so irritable. When normally clams her down, doesn't always work. She usually loves eating, but she has gone back to wanting a bottle all the time, and not even taking all of it. After this weekend, I just about need a break. She has cried more in the last 4 days than she has to date.

Re: Asthma

  • I have asthma and have all of my life, so I can tell you a little about the medications.

Whatever they're giving her through the nebulizer will most likely make her all hyped up.  It always gives me the shakes and makes my heart race, so it may be more difficult to calm or comfort her while she's getting breathing treatments.

Steroids will make her both hungry and irritable. In children, they can cause hyperactivity, although it's not a common side effect.  The hunger and irritability will also impact your ability to calm her.  I hate taking steroids, but they will make her feel better faster than ANYTHING else.

  • Bless yours and her hearts!  I don't have any advice but just wanted to tell you hang in there!
  • Thanks ladies! It is so crazy that you just made me cry sitting here at my desk this morning. It is so hard to hear her cry and scream like that. I am somewhat relieved to know that the irritability can be somewhat explained.

  • Poor thing.  I don't have experience with asthma, but what PPs said sounds good.  I hope she feels better soon!
