Babies: 6 - 9 Months

not using consonants at 6 months

Can anyone please tell me if it's normal that my daughter isn't really using any consonants at this age?  Every once in awhile I will hear a "ba" or "ma" but rarely.  She's very vocal with squeals and "ahhhh", but according to the books a lot of babies are already saying "gagagagagag" or "babababab".

Please help!

At DS's 6-month appointment, the pedi asked about this and I thought, hmmm, no, he really doesn't make "ba" or "da" sounds yet. He babbled constantly but no real consonants.

Of course, a few days later he started and hasn't stopped. I wouldn't worry too much as long as she's hitting her other milestones and still "talking" a lot.

  • Thank you!  She is doing really great with everything else and she's defintely very vocal :)  I hope it will start up any day!

  • DD still isn't at a little past 7 months. She just started making some "gaga" sounds, but still no other consonants. I'm starting to stress a little and mentioned it to DH's aunt who works with infants and she wasn't at all concerned. Like every other milestone, as soon as I worry about it, she starts doing it- haha- I'm hoping this one will be the same. :) BTW- I'm telling myself that as long as she's interested in the sounds we're making- she pays very close attention when we talk and make noises- and is babbling SOMEthing to herself, that everything is fine.

  • Normal!  Our ped  said they can start anywhere from 6-10 mths. LO just started B's this week.
  • DS2 is just shy of 8mos and isn't making any consonents either. His pedi wants to see him at 9mos to see if he has started by then.  Until then, he is already in EI for something else so I had the speech therapist come.  She said they do like to see some babbling with the hard consonents (example "b").  DS2 does do a soft consonent of "h" so sometimes it sounds like he says "hi".  He more coos still then anything else.  The ST said to make sure to mimic the cooing to get more back and forth conversation going (I was already doing this).  Since DS2 isn't sitting yet, she thinks that he may not be more vocal because he is concentrating on that.  Could something similar be happening with your LO?

  • Our pedi asked the same question at the 6 month appointment.  Of course I freaked out because DS really didn't make any consonant sounds.  He started around 7 months!

  • Our Ped isn't too concerned yet. She said as long as she is babbling, interacting with you as you mimick her and has so ooooh's aaahhs etc then the rest should come in due time. If she does not make any bbaba, gaga type sounds by 8 month appointment then we can start talking about more things to look into but at this point she said she is rolling, sitting and playing well on her own, she has great use of her hands and fingers that some babies do very well in some areas but take longer in others.
