1st Trip to the ER

Ava came down with a fever Saturday afternoon and it went up to 103 so we took her to GMBC. They ran a bunch of tests--it was terrible, at one point her, myself and DH were all crying. They think she has the hand, foot and mouth disease. I have no idea how she contacted it since she isn't in daycare and isn't around kids the often.  The incumbation period is 3-6 days.

We left the hopsital around 11 and her fever was gone so we went home and to bed. I got up around 2 to check on her and she was burning up--took her temp and it was 104.7--I was so scared and we called 911.  My son never had a fever that high.  They took us to Franklin Square Pediatric ER--gave her an IV with fluids on the way there and by the time we got there, it really went down.  They sent us home a short while later.

Sunday the three of us slept most of the day and yesterday she was ok. A little fever in the morning and nothing the rest of the day. She is with my mom today and is drinking and eating which makes me happy.

Does anyone know anything about this disease? I called the doctor this morning and they said as long as her fever doesn't come back, they don't need to see her.

  • I'm so sorry - that sounds really scary.  Could she have picked up @ playgroup last week?  I haven't heard about anybody else getting sick though. ..

  • It's possible--from what I hear it's really contagious. It could have been anywhere in the air though.

I'm glad to hear none of the other kids are sick because if they got it that day too, they would have had the symptoms already.

  • It is VERY scary....Sean spiked a fever of 104.6 once out of nowhere and it turned out to be some random viral illness, but they still did all the blood tests, catheter, etc etc etc. I am glad to hear she is doing better. Poor girl!

  • HFMD is usually caused by coxsackie virus.  It's super common in toddlers/children and really contagious.  Eloise has likely already had it because it's rolled through our parents' group several times over the last 2 yrs.   Since it's a virus there isn't much you can do other than let it run it's course and treat the fever w/ infant ibuprofen/acetaminophen.

Don't be surprised if Ava gets a rash as the fever goes away- that can happen w/ this virus along w/ roseola.

  • I am sorry to hear that - how scary!  I know that one of the moms on another board that I go to (American Pregnancy Association) recently went through that with her LO.  I am glad to hear that your dd is doing better!
