Abnormal thyroid- anyone have this or know what it is?

The nurse at my ob office just called and said my prenatal blood work just came back that my thyroid is abnormal.  She couldn't tell me much more about it except that she is calling in a prescription for me to start taking and that I can talk more about it to my doctor at my appt in 2 weeks.  Does anyone have any idea what this is or what it means?  I was expecting her to say my platelet count was low, because that was the problem I had with my last pregnancy.

  • She should have told you whether it was hypo or hyper.  Under or overactive...

Medication can keep it in line.  You should be fine.

  • I have Hypothyroidism - and I take a pill everyday (synthyroid). It is fine to take during pregnancy - I have been on its since I was 12. Really not a big deal - they should be able to get it under control and you'll be fine.

However; depending on how "off" your levels were, it may prohibit you from being able to BF. (Mine is such that they highly doubt that I will be able to.) Just something to look into...

  • I guess you don't know if it is under or over active? I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid after I had DS. I just take a little white pill everyday and have blood drawn regularly to monitor my levels to see if my dosage needs to be adjusted.
  • I was diagnosed hypothyroid about a month during a routine physical (just a few weeks before I found out I was pregnant).  I take a generic for Synthyroid everyday.  My primary doctor prescribed it to me and my OB plans to follow my levels.  I have an appt. with an endocrinologist for next month.  I think if it is left untreated it could cause problems.  That's great that they found out now and you can start taking the meds right away.  I think I may have had it after I had my daughter since I had a lot of trouble breastfeeding due to low supply.

  • I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in March and I take Synthroid as well. My levels came down in 4 weeks and I was able to get pg in late April. I go to an endocrinologist to monitor it, especially during the pregnancy, and share that infomation with my obgyn so that everyone is on the same page. I haven't changed my dosage since March because if your levels drop too low, then you'll become hyperthyroid. I get my blood work done every 6-7 weeks.

It is important to monitor your TSH levels because hypothyroidism affects the baby's brain development and other functions. In the early stages of the first tri, your baby does not have a thyroid and depends on the mother's body to provide the thyroid hormones. There are other complications that can occur if left unmonitored (go to about.thyroid.com), but the meds are completely safe and necessary for both you and your baby.

I take my meds everyday at 6am and take my prenatals at 9pm at night. You have to be careful to time when you take your prenatals because it will affect how your body absorb the hormones, so your best bet is to take your meds and prenatals roughly 12 hours apart to be on the safe side.

  • Thanks for the information.  I can't remember what she said about the levels, but the "synthroid" sounds familiar as the medication she mentioned.  I hope it's not expensive, since money is super tight.  If it's not a generic, I may need to ask about a generic form.  That's really interesting about the breastfeeding.  When DS was born, I had a HORRIBLE time trying to BF him.  I think I've realized looking back that I had a really low supply, so he got frustrated and he was always hungry after I fed him.  It was also extremely painful to feed him.  I was really hoping to try to BF again with this baby.  I will definitely ask about that.

  • I would talk to your doctor first. Having abnormal thyroids runs in my family and once you get on medication you can't get off. It is usually because your thyroid isn't functioning enough or it is functioning too much. This may be something not connected with your pregnancy, but just your body in general.
  • I was just told a few days ago that my TSH is low...indicating hyperthyroidsim which is apprently VERY common in pregnancy. My OB said she's gonna re-check the TSH and add in T3 and T4 and if those are abnormal, will send me to an endocrinologist. She said more than likely I wouldn't need meds, so I would speak with your OB before taking anything.

  • Make sure that your doctor is ok with the generic.  I take synthroid, and my endocrinologist says NO GENERIC!!   I pay $26/month instead of $10/month if it were generic.  Although the doctor told me that's too much and to ask the pharmacy what their cash price is for the meds.  Also looking into filling at Costco next time.

GL!  Get on the meds soon, as it can impact your baby.
