Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Scariest morning ever

I was in the kitchen this morning making my lunch for work when I heard Jack scream out. It wasn't like "I woke up come and get me" It was like "I am hurting and scared!!!". So I ran as fast as I could across the house to his room and look in his crib and he can't breath. I pick him up and am patting him on the back and realize it's mucus in his nose/throat. So I grab the suction bulb and sucked as much mucus out as possible. Man we were both crying and scared.

Has anyone dealt with this? Has anyones pedi prescribed and decongestant for babies this young?

  • Oh no you must have been terrified!  At least he was able to cry to tell you he was having trouble.  I had a similar situation when DS was about 2 weeks old but luckily it was in the middle of the night and I was holding him and could see that he wasn't moving any air.  So I did the first thing that came to mind and got him on the boob and it worked!  I don't know about decongestants. I would definitely call.
  • is he sick with a cold?

you might want to consider getting a crib wedge to keep his head elevated while he sleeps. it will definately cut down on the mucous in his throat

you can also get a positioner and keep him on his side (either while elevated or not). this way if he does get mucuous in his throat, he won't choke

If you are looking for something to help him breathe better, besides the obvious (humidifier) you can also get vicks plug ins that fill the room with vapors to help them breathe

you can also buy salt water nasal drops or aspirators at any drug store, both of those help cut down on decongestion

    good luck!!

  • So scary!

And yes, you can get decongestant for babies. DS had a cold around 8 weeks, and the pedi gave us a prescription for decongestant. It helped out tremendously.

We did all this for DS's congestion and it helped a lot. I've never heard of a dr prescribing a decongestant for an infant. My dr said that there were none that were safe for babies and we had to wait it out.

all this & pedi said we could give her some benadryl for her runny nose.  That was at 3 months & we gave it to her 2x's & it made her sleep horribly & really didn't help much.  Definitely call your pedi.  Which I'm sure you already have!  Emerson slept in her carseat for a week while congested!

  • My older DS is 5.  When he was an infant, they sold infant decongestant drops.  Sometime in the last few years, it was shown that decongestants and other cold medicines aren't safe/effective for kids under 5.  They relabeled all the infant decongestant drops as big-kids medicine (if they even have them...I haven't looked lately.)

My current pediatrician agrees that kids shouldn't have them.  There are some dr's that feel they are safe and the biggest reason that they recommended against them was overdosing issues (people not reading the dosage and using a regular spoon to "measure") and they still prescribe them.  It's totally up to you and your doctor where you fall on the issue.

DS was sick last weekend.  We used saline nose drops, the booger sucker (struggling away from the nose sucker was how he learned to roll over), a humidifier and he slept in his bouncy chair in our room (so that he was more upright).

  • Thank you for all the advice. I have called pedi and am waiting for a call back. I will try all those remedies if he doesn't give us any meds. Yeah I was sooo grateful he could cry out. WOW being a mom isn't only physically exhausting it's mentally and emotionally too!
