At-home ultrasound question

Is a doppler the same as the ultrasound machine at the OB office or is it for listening to the heartbeat only? Where can I find either and how affordable are they?

I've always had this impression that personal u/s machines were only for the fabulously rich but I've read posts that said things like "if you have a doppler..." etc.

Re: At-home ultrasound question

  • I have a doppler and paid $69 on amazon. It is for heat beat only no pictures.
  • A doppler is only for heartbeat.  I have however gone to the vet clinic where my moms works and did my first ultrasound on myself at 6wks 4days and saw our little peanut.  I think I will go in this week again when I go see my mom.

What the heck kind of u/s machine do vets use which would allow you to actually see your baby at 6wks?  I am assuming you did not use it transvaginally...

I've never had an internal!  It's the same that the doctor can use.  I had a full bladder and saw our the little pea and we saw the heartbeat.  The u/s machines there are just like a regular one.  We used the hand wand on my stomach.  Just like all the other u/s I had from my doctor.  There was another tech there PG as well and she found out the sex before her appt with her doctor.  Whenever she wanted a peek at the baby they did.  My doctor that it was awesome that we did the u/s.

  • I wouldn't recommend an "at home u/s machine". The u/s techs do years worth of schooling (at least up here they do) to be competent at their jobs. You f'ing around at home with an u/s machine is going to accomplish nothing good. Get a doppler.

So, you're saying at 6 wks you saw your baby through an u/s which was NOT vaginally.  That is one super duper u/s machine in the vets office to detect your fetus that early.  Very cool!

Yup that's what I'm saying.  I was 6wks 4days and saw the baby with the abdominal wand(external).  I was also 7wks with an external ultrasound when we saw DS.  Like I said I never had any internal u/s with either PG.  And we saw the flicker of the heartbeat which was really cool.  Wasn't expecting to see that early.  But I knew when I o'd so I knew if something was there you would see the baby.

My mom said that even some of the bigger vet clinics and vet hospitals have the 3d/4d u/s machines.  They don't however, heck my doctors clinic doesn't even have the 3d/4d!
