Babies: 3 - 6 Months

In Arkansas, with my racist family

I am from Chicago.  Both of my parents were hippies, left wing liberals.  My grandma passed away yesterday, and I am currently in Arkansas (where my dad's family is from) for the funeral.

My aunt stayed down here and fits the southern "bible belt" stereotype.  She is an Evangelical and is blatantly racist.  She is a teacher and was talking about how all the "stupid kids in her class are Mexican".

She knows damn well DH is Mexican.  I reminded her of this fact, and that DH is one of the smartest people I know.  She said "well, there is an exception to every rule".

The final straw is when she said she was putting together a board of pictures for the funeral tomorrow.  I said there were no pictures of Kai in the great-grandchildren section and that I didnt mind printing one out for her.  She said that it was ok, they had plenty of pictures.  Im not sure if she doesnt want him on there because he's "Brown" or since he's the product of those "god-hatin Obama lovers" that DH and I are.... either way, its hard not to take this personally.  She's never cared much for me or my parents, but leave my kid alone!

Those of you who are religious, please pray to give me the strength to not punch this moron in the head.

I would be boiling. You should print a giant 8x10 and frame it next to the poster. He's a grandkid, too.

You're a stronger person than I am and you must have loved your grandma dearly to keep your mouth shut.

I'm so sorry for your loss and that you're having to deal with your asinine aunt right now. I'll be sending lots of good thoughts and positive vibes to you!

My T&Ps are right there with you!  I feel you, m'dear... part of the reason that we don't talk to my FIL anymore is that he thinks that I'm an idiot because I voted for the colored man.

Oh, and that's the pinkest "brown" baby I've ever seen!!!

  • Ha! Sounds like my step-grandmother (and my employer for that matter). FI (and DS) are Mexican, but that doesnt stop either of those two "Christians" from making racist jokes. I love my brown baby and my liberal politics!

How about the "I look like I adopted my baby" club. People are CONSTANTLY asking me that. I guess my blonde hair and blue eyes don't look like they could create a dark little peanut.

One lady said (when I had both my kids with me), "Oh, this must be your son and daughter! He looks just like you! And, oh you adopted her! (not a question, a statement!) Did you get her domestically or from one of those Third World countries?"

Um, I got her from my uterus, thank you.

(Not that there's anything wrong with adoption. If I had the money (and if DH was a citizen) I'd adopt. But even if I did adopt her, it wasn't that lady's business. Rude.)

  • Oh my goodness Chili. You might not want to hit her, but can WE head to Arkansas and beat her ass for you? I'm with AEGrimm--you need to put an 8X10 glossy of Kai right up on that collage. What a crock. Stay strong babe.

Ugh. SO frustrating. Not that I blame people, because I know we don't have the same coloring. But if you just take a second and look at her, you'll realize that we have the same eye shape and the same cheeks and mouth.

  • I am from IL too. When I was 13 my parents moved from Aurora to Plainfield. I came home the first day from my new school and asked her why everyone was white. My pe class was also seperated with boys on one side and girls on the other...this was 1996!

Im from Waukegan, so I was consistently the only kid who looked like me in my class. When I went away to school, I went to Eastern IL.... I was like whats with all these white people?!

  • I am so sorry you are going through this!  I probably would have printed out and past it on there myself just to prove a point.

DH is white, but I have dated "outside my race" in the past.  DH and I got into a huge fight when he found out about my "past" soon after we got engaged.  I honestly thought he was going to walk away.  Finally, after talking sense into him, he says "I know your past made you who you are.  And I love who you are.  But you can NEVER tell my dad.  If he finds out he will make me break off the engagement."  I couldn't believe it.  And after meeting his father... he's an ignorant b@stard that needs to learn a thing or two about society as a whole.  It's taken a long time, but DH is finally starting to lose the ignorance that his parents have implanted.

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall after we were talking about pasts and I mentioned my ex-fi family had immigrated here from Columbia.  They have since learned my views on the topic and won't bring it up around me.  But I couldn't believe that the ILs feelings were so strong that DH had to mention that to me!

2 of the 3 kids are so white I'm lucky they aren't translucent.  Gianna  DH's coloring so at least she doesn't look like a shade darker than albino.

Haha same here...in fact people usually comment on just how white she is. Poor girl, she gets it from me. I had friends in hs that called me elmer....as in elmers glue.

My DH went to college there. He used to talk about that place being a "dry" county and having to drive to OK for beer.

  • Can we make it into a mixed baby club? I'm Spanish (Puerto Rican) but DH is Irish and well, DS's hair is already blonde. The only thing he got from me is my big brown eyes.

I like that idea: quick catch Shorty before she makes it. I would FB her, but I'm at work and they have FB blocked. Apparently it hinders productivity, blah, blah, blah....

Sorry I'm late here, but I haven't been on much yesterday or today.  I get the same thing ALL.THE.TIME.  Everyone says that my kids look exactly like DH just because they have dark skin, eyes, and hair.  But, the shape of their eyes and lips are all me.  No one ever sees that, though.
