Babies: 0 - 3 Months

BF: 10 lbs, how much BM for bottle?

I'm finally starting to pump so I have a stash.  I have something Friday night and would like DH to do a feeding.  Can you give me a ballpark on how many oz he should try and give her?  She's 3 weeks old- I'm guessing she's 10 lbs. since she was 9 lbs. 10 oz one week ago at the pediatrician's....

As for burping- should he burp her once halfway through the bottle or more frequently?

Thanks!

  • The amount is based on how frequently your baby nurses, not their weight. They typically consume about 25 ounces a day, some more some less. This calculator on kellymom is very helpful to get an idea of how much to offer:

  • Personally, I leave 5 oz. bottles for DH to do feedings.  I know my boy is 2 months, but I usually have 2 bottles in the fridge and he typically makes it through those in the 2 feedings DH does.  Besides, if he doesn't eat it all, you can put it back in the fridge and freeze it later if needed!

I try to burp Nolan every 2 oz. or if he's really being slow with eating, about every 15 min.  That seems to work best for us.

this is very different from everything i've ever been told about storing breastmilk.  once a baby puts his or her lips to a bottle, the clock starts ticking and you have an hour before the bottle is considered unsafe to give due to possible bacteria contamination.  i don't think i'd freeze a used bottle's remains either.  i would definitely double check before using or freezing leftovers after a feeding if it extends more than an hour into the future.

Ditto, after an hour it needs to be tossed.
