So this is going to catch me a million flames... yet, I shall bravely proceed!
If your OB was pretty sure you would end up a cesarean delivery due to rapid fetal weight gain (I have diabetes), would you ask to be induced a week early? He was planning on inducing me at 39 weeks anyway- would it be insane to ask to deliver her the week before to try to avoid the cesarean by having her be that much smaller (she has been gaining over a pound a week the past 3 weeks)? His rule of thumb is currently that if she is over 9 lbs, he wants to do a c-section. At her last U/S, she was 6lbs4oz at 35 weeks.
I feel very selfish even suggesting this, because I am not uncofortable yet and want my daughter to be a maturely developed as possible before she is born, but type 1 diabetes puts you at higher risk of infection and slower healing rates than patients without and I only get 6 weeks of leave without losing my position. What are your thoughts?
Re: would you...?
I would sit down and talk to the Dr about it and then decide. Honestly, I don't know enough about diabetes and pregnancy to even try and say what I'd do in this situation. It's definitely not the same old "should I ask for an induction" question.
I hope you can get some good answers and advice from your Dr and come to a decision together.

I have no problems with inductions when there is a medical reason. It sounds like you have a valid medical reason, so you should talk to your doc and then the 2 of you decide what is best.
Good luck!

Don't feel bad. There are reasons that doctors do inductions and it sounds like that may be your best option. But, sit down talk and keep your options open.
Just keep in mind, from what I've heard... the less you are "ready" (softened cervix, head dropped, etc) the more likely an induction will result in a C-section anyways.
My Dr. says that at 2cm, 80% effaced and stage -1 I still have a 50% chance of a c-section if I were to induce (at 40+ weeks).
All are different, so that may not apply, but that seems to be the trend... scheduled induction turns to c-section!

I have diabetes too, and I just scheduled my c-section at exactly 39 weeks. I think its just standard. But if the dr. feels you are putting you or the baby at risk by waiting he will do it earlier... thats what they told me anyway. It just all depends on how big the baby is doing.
Isn't it an 8 week leave when you have a c-section? At least thats what it is in NY.
