2nd Trimester

"Babymoon" planning

DH and I are trying to plan a trip at the end of June/beginning of July, but we can't decide on a location! I'll be around 23 weeks so I can't go somewhere too hot/humid and I want there to be lots of opportunity for sight-seeing.

We're really wanting to travel to Europe. We're thinking a bus tour type thing would be good to cut down on the walking.

Ideas? Where are you ladies going before baby arrives?

Re: "Babymoon" planning

  • Personally, I would never do a bus tour in Europe (or anywhere for that matter).  They are very planned and I hate travelling like that.  If you wanted to do Europe, go to one major city and sight see leisurely. I would be more concerned with length of flight.  I'm not sure what would be an easy flight for you from Ontario, so offering suggestions is difficult for me.

We'd be flying out of Toronto, Buffalo, Rochester or Detroit... whichever is cheapest. I'm worried about the long flights too...

  • if you're ok with hanging out with a lot of older people (50's and up), a river cruise is a fantastic way to see Europe.  It's not as structured or go-go-go as a bus tour, but you still get lots of guided walking tours, get to see lots of different cities/towns along the way, and can relax on the boat in between places rather than being crammed on a bus.  We did one in October and loved it, other than being closer in age to the staff on the boat than we were to the other passengers.  I really think they need to start marketing them more to younger people, because it really was a great way to travel.

  • MH and I went to Mexico when I was 15.5 weeks (a vacation we had already planned) and we are planning a long weekend at Cape May for our anniversary when I will be 34/35 weeks. It was nice to relax and sit by/in the pool. I've never traveled to Europe (A big regret of mine, so we are planning a trip to London after LO arrives!) so I cannot comment on a bus tour or sightseeing. I will say most of my friends/coworkers have done a relaxing trip.

I am currently 24 weeks (tomorrow) and just had major difficulty walking around town with MH. It is about 92 degrees outside and I had to keep stopping for breaks. I was an avid runner before this pregnancy but dr. had me stop because of my m/c history. I have been walking between 2-3 miles a few days a week and exercising. However, starting around 22 weeks, I began to have major troubles walking so I would be careful with how much you base your trip around sightseeing. HTH!

  • We thought about Europe too, but I don't want to deal with the long flight + jet lag while pg.  DH agreed b/c he remembers how jet lagged we were even in college when we went to Italy.  So then we thought about a cruise but I just found out that they don't allow you to cruise after 24 weeks on most (if not all) cruise lines.  We won't be ready to go until around 26-27 weeks so that's out.  So now we are looking for an all-inclusive somewhere.  I just want to go somewhere and relax and not have to do anything but be lazy and read a book without a toddler in tow :-)

  • I vote for Europe!!

We've been living in Europe for almost two years, and there are many quick and easy ways to get around without being confined to a bus tour. If you do some planning ahead of time, you can do some great (cheap) train trips to a couple different cities and spend a few days at each place, look around, enjoy your hotel, eat amazing food, etc.

We taken many day trips to France, Austria, Switzerland, and all over Germany. The great thing about most of Europe is their public transportation systems (bus or train) usually run quite smoothly and are easy to figure out.

A side note- some of the countries (Italy and Germany especially) will probably be CAH-RAZY while you're traveling because of the World Cup. Personally, I think it'd be awesome, but just a warning. Germany is already losing "its" mind and will still have two weeks until the first game.

My mom (in her 50s) has been on two river cruises and they were spectacular. She's totally not the "planned tour" type either but there's so much freedom to hop on and hop off whenever you want on these things. (To compare, she one took a bus trip of Scotland and was all "NEVER AGAIN." She felt like cattle.) Yes, the crowd is a bit older.

But my husband and I (30) just got back from our baby moon to the Caribbean. We stayed in an all-inclusive and I'd say everything was lovely except for the fact that almost everyone there who wasn't there for a wedding (built in "groups") or on their own honeymoons (and therefore wanted to be alone) were definitely older. We expected more socializing, but it was really just us.

  • With my first we went to Florida and the second we went to Bermuda. I was 23 weeks both times (not planned, just worked out that way). However, all we wanted to do was lay around. I will say that at 23 weeks, any walking we did caused me to stop and use the bathroom every 5 minutes.
  • Although Europe sounds like a blast! We are driving up to Madison, WI to the zoo and farmers market for a few days. Crossing our fingers, we will just have found out we have a healthy baby and know the gender, so we can get the LO some fun stuff!!
  • Personally, I wouldn't leave the country while pg especially after the 1st tri due to food, water, long flights and general concerns if you have complications. I realize other countries have safe hospitals, it's just not worth the risk to me.  We are going to Vegas next week - I'll be 18 weeks.  I plan on lounging in the pool a couple hours a day(we'll jhave a cabana), staying hydrated, eating fabulous lunches/dinners and shopping til I drop.  It'll be hot, but it's been hotter than the devil up here and as long as you stay hydrated and use common sense with the sun the warmer climates can be just as fun during pregnancy.

  • This is totally TMI, but Baby came into being while we were traveling through Austria in January!  I LOVE Austria - namely Vienna and Salzburg, but I'm not sure if I would feel comfortable on a long trip now to Europe.  It just seems really far and I know that I would want to see EVERYTHING and exhaust myself.

For our Babymoon, and I am NOT what I would consider a "Vegas" person (i.e. I hate the pretend architecture, obviously can't drink right now, and don't really gamble), but this was actually the PERFECT Babymoon location!  The spas in Vegas are fantastic!  We stayed in a suite at the Vdara for what a crappy room would cost anywhere else.  We ate at all of our favorite places - MIchaell Mina, etc.  We went got perfect seats for Phantom.  And we just hung out at the pool being pampered when we weren't eating or getting a message!  Yes, it will be really hot, but that makes a dip in the pool so much nicer.  Otherwise, it's pretty much all indoors (spas, restaurants, shows, etc).  And plane tix and hotel rooms are always so reasonable.

Whatever you end up doing, have a great time!  I'm totally considering having another Babymoon because we had so much fun!

  • We did a long weekend in Dublin last spring and loved it. I would like to visit Galway next.

We just returned from Punta Cana, which was nice. I don't know where we will go this fall, before baby is due. Paris would be nice. Or maybe San Francisco?

  • We're leaving for DC tomorrow! So excited! And we're taking our annual trip to the FL Keys for lobsters season at the end of July. I'm psyched about that as well, but probably won't be diving and going out on the boat all day every day, so it'll be different. Instead I'll be hanging out by the pool and shopping with my mom and aunt, so I think I'll live. :)

I wouldn't recommend flying to Europe though. I had a hard time with that the two times I did it and I wasn't pregnant! It's exhausting, hard to get comfortable and stressful, and that was when I was just out of high school!

  • Our honeymoon is now a babymoon, too.  We're going to Norway for 10 days at the end of August; I'll be 26 weeks.  We were going to do a cruise at first, but we realized this wasn't the most effective way for us to fit as much in as possible.  Now we're doing it all on our own, and we can't wait!

What cruise lines won't let you travel after 24 weeks?  I didn't see any of those restrictions when we were researching our trip.

If cruises and bus tours won't work for you, going it alone is so much fun.  Planning and researching a trip is 1/2 the fun for me!  Traveling Europe by train is great.  Easy to get from location to location, plus it's a great way to see a lot of scenery while en route.

I saw it on Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian I think. It's pretty common.
