3rd Trimester

Baby Weight at Growth Ultrasound

I just had a growth ultrasound this morning and the baby measured 5 pounds, 12 ounces.  I know that's in the normal range (although a bit on the big side), but I'm curious about the percentile.  Does anyone know of a chart that shows percentile by gestational week?  I've dug around google a bit, but come up empty.  thanks!

Re: Baby Weight at Growth Ultrasound

  • I'm surprised the ob didn't tell you.  Or did the u/s tech tell you the weight?

  • It was the ultrasound tech.  I guess I should have asked, I just didn't think about it until later.  I know as long as she's healthy, it doesn't matter.  I'm just curious how big a baby I should expect!
  • I believe they said Ellie was 4.5 pounds at 33 1/2 weeks.  The tech predicted an 8-9 pound baby based on %-ile and Ellie was only 6 lbs., 4 oz. at birth.  They are often off by a pound or even more.  If your belly measures on track, don't worry too much about it.

  • My u/s tech told us the weight then the next appt. my mw told us the percentile.

  • The u/s tech told us right there. Yeah, ours is "supposed" to be in the 97th percentile. I'm just not feeling that yet. I have dropped and I think I would be waaayyy more uncomfortable with a monster baby inside of me right now.
  • At 33w 1d, my growth scan showed the baby weighed 4lb. 2oz. and we were in the 30th percentile, so yes, your baby is on the big side.  At 36w 2d, my growth scan showed our baby weighed 4lb. 14oz. which is in the 10th percentile, so that at least gives you some idea.  Sorry, it's hard to find a good growth chart online.
  • At 32 w my baby was 4lbs 13oz and in the 65th percentile.  Not much different from yours.

  • Thanks, ladies!

Future Mrs...I have a regular appt. on Fri, so I'll ask then.

JillyBean - That's crazy the dr.'s estimate was so off!  I've heard they can be off a pound, but not 2-3 pounds!

  • I was told that the ultrasounds can be off by 2 lbs in either direction.  They estimated DS would be a 9 lb baby, but he was born at 7lbs, 2 oz.  They really aren't too accurate all the time.

  • At my 35/36 week appointment they did a growth ultrasound. DH measured 7lb3oz and was in the 83%.
  • I had a growth u/s at 34 weeks, and she was about 5 1/2 pounds.  They told me that was 56% percentile.  Sounds like you are almost at the same spot - a little bit large, but nothing to be worried about.  HTH!

  • Here is a link to a chart in an article I found a few weeks ago.  Hope that helps.
