Breastfeeding

question regarding night feeding

Was talking to my sis-in-law about her experiences as a new mom and she was saying that her doc told her when her daughter was first born that if she was sleeping to not wake her to feed her. (She was forumula feeding). However, I read somewhere else that you're supposed to wake to feed. I will be BF with some pumping for bottles.

What do you ladies think?

Re: question regarding night feeding

  • I was told by the pediatrician during the first 2 weeks to wake the baby to feed every 3 hours if she doesn't wake up on her own. After 2 weeks, I could let her sleep as long as she wanted (not that it was very long).

  • I will wake DS to eat until he regains his birthweight, per my pedi and LC's recommendations. :-)

Yes. Wake until baby reaches their birth weight. This was also the recommendation I was given by multiple sources.

This...plus if you don't wake the baby, then your supply will be effected. Feed he/she as much as possible in the beginning...it's VERY important for your supply! I stopped waking DS at night at around 1 month old (even after he reached his birth weight).

  • Yes, wake baby until they regain their birth weight. I never had to worry about it though...DD was/is up every 3 hours or more often.
