Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does your toddler sleep the same on vacation?

DS sleeps really good at home - goes down without much of a peep and STTN 10-11 hours, unless he's sick or really teething. But he sleeps like crap if we're not at home, and it doesn't matter if its somewhere he's really used to (like my parents house) or somewhere new. If we're not at home, it always takes forever to get him to sleep, and I normally have to cuddle with him until he finally falls asleep, and then move him into the pack n play. He'll then wake up sometime in the middle of the night, and spend the rest of the night sleeping with us. We keep the same bedtime routine when we travel, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

In the summer, we spend most weekends at my parents lake house (about 45 minutes from our house) and he doesn't STTN if we're not at home.

Just curious how other LOs sleep is affected when traveling/on vacation?

Re: Does your toddler sleep the same on vacation?

  • We just got back from Hawaii last week and my DS slept just fine.  But I had to laugh when I read your post because i always cuddle DS to sleep and he sleeps with us at home too!  So vacation was business as usual for us. :-)  It doesn't seem like too big of a deal to cuddle him to sleep on vacation, right?  It is a strange place for them.

    Good luck!

  • We spent one night at MIL's lake house this weekend.  DD would not sleep in her PNP so slept with me on the pull out couch and she was up at least 6 times.  So not great.
  • It's business as usual for us on vacation, too. At home DD sleeps with us and I can expect her to wake a couple times during the night. Same thing when we're away. It's not too hard to get her to go to sleep, though. I think as long as mummy's around, she doesn't really care where she is.
  • DS sleeps like crap on vacations. Takes forever to fall asleep, wakes up at night, you name it. He's a great sleeper at home. I've just kind of accepted it as "collateral damage" when traveling. The good part is that he's so excited by new places and faces, that his mood is not too affected by the lesser amount of sleep. And he catches up when we get home.
