XP from 0-3 ? about adding FF to BF

I've been EBF since Ben was born, but I'm starting to hate it. I think I need a little more freedom that offering a bottle once in awhile will offer. Also, while his latch is usually spot on, my nipples seem really sensitive at night and I am literally counting the minutes to him being done! I started pumping after an evening feed for one oz (how pedi's nurse recommended) But it has taken like 4 days to get enough for a bottle. Any suggestions on a pumping schedule?

Also, has anyone supplemented BF feeds with a formula feed here and there? How has it gone for them? DS has had no problems with tolerating BF so I'm nervous to introduce formula and rock the boat. I know it's so good for him,  but mommy needs a break or she's going to lose her mind!

Pump in the morning instead.  You have more milk in the mornings, and if you pump consistently, you will be able to get more.  Pump about an hour after his morning feed.  After about a week, you will probably be able to get enough for at least one feeding per pump session.  I built up a great freezer stash this way.

If you are going to add formula, I would give a mixture of formula and BM.  I had to supplement in the beginning due to supply issues, so he got bottles with a 50/50 mix.

Your nipples will heal.  Mine were sore for about 2 months before they stopped bothering me.  If you don't already, use Lansinoh cream.  It really helps when they are sore!

  • We had to supplement DS with formula until my milk came in . He was nine and a half pounds at birth and starving!  He was in the NICU for a few days, so I pretty much had to pump to get my supply up. (I was able to nurse him, but they don't let you back there quite often enough to set up a totally on demand schedule.)

I was getting a total of 2 ounces per pump on day 4 with pumping after almost every feed and now at 5 and a half weeks I only pump occasionally and get between 2 and 4 ounces per side--generally 2 to 3 feeds worth per pump.  I do it often enough to have bottles if we go out or if I have to go out without DS.

Also, we still have some formula bottles left from when we were supplementing.  I carry those in my diaper bag to have back-ups if I don't have enough breast milk bottles.  I don't use them often, but DS takes them fine and I haven't had any trouble with supply.
