Gerber stage 1 vs stage 2

My DH is great - he volunteered to do the grocery shopping this morning.  However, when he picked up sweet potato jars, like I asked, he got the stage 2 instead of 1.  From the jar, they look the same.  Is there a huge difference so that I shouldn't give them to DS?  We just started him on non-rice solids about 4 days ago and he loves sweet potatoes.

Re: Gerber stage 1 vs stage 2

  • They might just be a bit thicker?  The stage one sweet potatoes are pretty watery.

  • Read the ingredients.  If they are the same as the stage 1, I say try him on them.  If the ingredients are the same, then it's likely just a texture thing.  You could try the gerber website, too.

  • Honestly, I think the difference is that the stage 2 is a 4 oz jar compared to the 2 oz jar for stage 1.  We've done stage 2 since the beginning.

Probably just thicker.  I would mix in some BM or formula to get the thinner consistency for now.

  • i think it's just a larger portion. if he did fine on stage 1 sweets potatoes he will be fine with these too.

  • From what I remember with DS, the only difference is that the stage 2 is a larger portion that the stage 1.  Otherwise I believe they are exactly the same.
  • my pedi said its just thicker & a bigger portion

  • I wanted to know the answer to this awhile ago, so I checked out the ingredients.  They are both exactly the same except for the size of the container.  I didn't notice any difference with the consistency or texture.

You do, however have to watch with some of them because they start adding other ingredients at Stage 2 with some of the foods.  But the Sweet Potatoes, Squash, and other single veggies/fruits are all the same.

  • One thing I did notice about Gerber foods.  A LOT of added salt, compared to some of the other brands.  Even the Disney brand stuff Walmart carries has no added salt.
