Teachers and ECEs, come in

I'm designing a classroom for one of my classes. It's for an before and after school program, so its not a typical classroom design with desks, etc. But I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for different elements to include? The room should have pets (I thought a couple fish bowls), plants, separate areas for different activities, room for storage. . .anything I'm overlooking?

Re: Teachers and ECEs, come in

  • Comfy seating? Also, those travel table things (soft on lap side, hard writing surface on top)?

What grade level is this for??

  • Loading the player...
  • Good idea about the travel table things!

It's for school-aged children, so ages 6-12. Kind of a wide range :/

  • I would also maybe get some chalk board paint for cabinets..... makes a fun writing surface that can be reused all the time! And get the HUGE chalk crayons. Super fun!!!?

(I am living vicariously through this project....I teach Juniors and Seniors so I can't do all the cutesy stuff!)?

  • I would allow room for a small table or two. Kids love to color/draw no matter what their age. And it's a place for them to work on homework. (Which is something we're required to do in our afterschool program, but that might be different for you)

Our rooms are multipurose, they house preschoolers during the school hours so we have different centers like Housekeeping (play kitchen set up) and Dramatic Arts (which is like a puppet show area, also has costumes and such) the older kids still play with this stuff when they come in but that might only be because it's what they have.

Blocks or Lincoln logs are always a hit. Bean bag chairs too.

  • Kitchen/Area for snacks. A sink for clean up. A reading or quite area. An area that allows for movement (carpet area). A place to do homework. Access to an outside playground...

I'm trying to remember all of the things there were at the program I worked at.

  • A reading corner is always nice. With bookshelves, carpet, comfy cushions or bean bag chairs to sit on. You can also include a small table with a tape/cd player & headphones for audio books. A computer centre would be nice too. Other things you may need are: an area with hooks/cubbies for each child's belongings, a word wall/letter centre, paint easels, sand/water table.

  • I taught preschool so I'll just explain how my classroom was set up.

We had a library where the books were changed out each week.

We had a science/math table.  The items were changed daily or weekly depending on the curriculum.

We had two easels and an art station.

We had toys, but the kids had limited time there.  They had to visit each station.

There was a literacy station and there were different activities to help with letter comprehension, things like that.

We also had a quiet area (a bunch of bean bags) where the kids would go and take a break if they were getting too wild or if they just needed to be alone.

    HTH

ETA: I just saw it's for grades 6-12 so none of my suggestions will help.  Sorry!!

That is an awesome idea! We actually did that to our kitchen table so moses can scribble on it.

ETA: Thanks for all the great ideas, everyone!
