When did you start finger foods with your LO?

Hi ladies,

When did you start finger foods with your LO?

What are the best finger foods to start with?

Cheerios/Puffs? Fruit? Veggies?

Re: When did you start finger foods with your LO?

  • We started finger foods at about 7 months.  We started with soft cooked veggies (broccoli florets, baby carrots, etc).  She LOVES broccoli.  We moved on to fruits (watermelon spears, cantaloupe, etc).  Then we offered "snack" foods such as Cheerios/Puffs.

  • We started around 7 months.  We honestly gave puffs first since they are easier to pick up (not slippery like fruit) and then moved on to pieces of steamed fruit and veggies.  I do see posts where people coat fruit with cheerio crumbs to make it easier to pick up though.

  • 6 months. We did a lot of the baby led weaning. So she got a lot of things quickly. I think broccoli stalks and puffs/cheerios were among the first.
  • We started at 6 months. We decided to do the BLW method, so we started DS off by letting him feed himself finger foods. He's handled them really well. He's not a fan of purees.

  • We started at 7 months.  We started purees at 6 months but she wasn't fond of them, so we switched to a BLW approach around 7 months.  It's embarassing, but I can't remember now what her first finger food was.  I think it was bananas.  We only did puffs once and they scared me.   They're hard and round, I thought they were lousy first foods.  They also dissolve, so they're not really teaching a baby to grind things up.
