Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Our LO is no longer sleeping through the night......??

Hi ladies,

Our LO was sleeping through the night but lately he's not. He is teething so I think that may be playing a part in it too. And that he is growing and coming into new milestones.

We put him to bed at 7:30pm and he wakes every night at 3 or 4am excited and looking to play. He has been doing this for the past 2-3 weeks where previously he would sleep the whole night. I am assuming the teething is playing a part in that or that he's just hungry at that time and that is why he is waking. We do give him tylenol for the pain when we think that he needs it but he still wakes at that time.

We give him a bottle of 6oz when he wakes at 3-4am and then he goes back to sleep til about 7am.

Just wanted to get your thoughts. I know babies sleep patterns change so often as they are teething and are trying to master new milestones. Wanted to get your thoughts and see what your LO's sleep schedules look like.

  • Have you tried increasing the # of ounces in his last bottle at night? Is your LO on solids yet? Maybe increase his solid intake.  These are just suggestions though as I have a LO that has yet to STTN and I prettyt sure, for her, it is not food related. : (

  • We did try and increase the night bottle. He always took 6 ounces before bed. Lately, he won't even take that. I am not sure if the teething is playing a part in that. It seems to change every night. Sometimes he will take 4 then other nights 6oz. He is taking solids and eats a pretty big portion at dinner which he always has.

    Thank you for your suggestions.

  • I would bet on growing.... if he is waking and needing to eat, then it is a growth spurt.  Let the PP said, try to increase the amount of oz at bedtime and see if that helps since you don't want to condition them to wake at 4 for a bottle.  My DS did this too and it was a short phase.

Our pedi said that a lot of times when babies are getting to a new milestone at this time that they tend to have more wake periods at night.  Then she said if they require a bottle in the middle of the night that they are hungry.  I personally didn't agree with her on the second part.  I tried it anywayI increased the formula and that still didn't help.  They took the bottle in our case because that's what my babies do to get back to sleep.  For us, I truly felt it was a developmental piece.  It still is happening at times like last night but getting better as they are regulating their new developmental stage.

Hang in there!  Our babies began STTN at 3 months old and had it mastered between 4-5 months old.  We hadn't heard from them in the middle of the night since february so this took us by surprise.
