2nd Trimester

Finding Out Sex Early?

I have an appointment on Thursday this week and my doctor is going to try to get a sneak peek at the baby's sex.

My mother in law is in the hospital, and she is likely to pass before Thursday. If she makes it until then, I would like her to know what her grandchild will be.

Did any of you find out the gender early? I will be 14 weeks, 6 days on Thursday. I know she will probably be making a guess at best, but I guess it is better than knowing nothing...

  • i am sure they can give a guess at what your LO will be. I may hold off on buying any pinks and blue until the anatomy scan. But if anything else it will make your MIL a little more at peace.

  • We found out at 14 weeks. Baby was in perfect position with legs spread wide open. It was clear as day that it's a boy.

  • First, let me start by saying you have my deepest sympathy regarding your mother in law. I will be praying for you and your family.

I had a consult with my high risk doctor when I was 14w3d. They were able to take an early gender guess that its a boy. I don't know if your doc will be doing 3d ultrasound for the gender guess or not. My tech used regular ultrasound and said it is easier to tell the gender that way. I am including my ultrasound pic that made her guess boy. GL and please let us know what you find out. The legs are up in the air and there is an arrow (finger) pointing to the private parts.

  • I am so sorry to hear about your MIL. Definitely sending T&Ps your way. As to your question, I get an U/S at every appt I go to and they wouldn't even make a guess until I was 17.5wks and was told even then it was a little early. However, if you explain your situation to your Dr they may be willing to make same sort of guess. I would just be sure not to go out and buy anything gender specific. Good luck!

  • We found out we were having a boy at 15 weeks 5 days. And it was sooooo obvious he was a boy, even at that time! I asked our technician how they make a definitive determination if it IS unclear boy/girl. She told us that they always look for the presence of penis or labia... they don't look for the absence of them. Good luck to you! Such an exciting time!!! : )

Yeah, our big ultrasound is not scheduled until 19 weeks (which will determine what clothes I buy and such), but it would be nice just to have a guess. I even contemplated going out and getting an intelligender... I just want to have something to tell her. Not that it matters too much, but I think it would be nice for her to know.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. She is just hanging on right now. She has been in a 7 month battle with pancreatic cancer. It is breaking our hearts, but we also don't want to see her suffering anymore.

  • I had this and it was WRONG!!!!!  Luckily,  we didn't buy anything though.  But, we were getting used to the idea that it was a boy and had thought of a name, we were surprised to find out it was a girl even though we knew it wasn't 100%.  IMHO, I would just tell them you would rather wait until you are further along and not guess.

I would be glad to wait until 19 weeks... I just wanted something to tell my mother in law before she dies.

I say go for it. You are doing it for a wonderful reason. They could be wrong even later in pregnancy on the gender. You are not doing any harm by trying to get a guess now. I agree that I wouldn't run out and buy anything based on gender by their guess. Again, GL.

  • Honestly, if you're going to be almost 15 weeks, your chances are good that it will be accurate.  I do ultrasound, and can tell on alot of people at that time as long as the baby is showing off.  I wouldn't paint a room, but there's no reason why you can't have a guess.

I am so sorry about your MIL.  My T&P coming your way ((hugs))

ETA: I see you said Thursday and you'll be on your way to 16 weeks, that's great timing.  Fingers crossed baby cooperates!

  • I had an u/s at 15w4d and my SO couldn't be there so I told her I didn't want to know until my anatomy scan. She told me at 15 weeks it would just be a guess and not be 100% for another few weeks. I know someone who found out early and then a few weeks later had her anatomy scan and the tech from a few weeks earlier was definitely wrong. So I wouldn't go out and buy a bunch of pink or blue stuff until you know for sure. GL.
  • Im so sorry to hear about your MIL. I found out at 15 weeks 6 days. Only a week later- so maybe you can!! Good luck, with everything!
  • I found out at 16 weeks and 2 days that it was a girl.  And it was very clear... girls have 3 bones in their pelvic region that boys don't have.  I just said "Hey, I know it might be hard but if you could even just say what you think it might be, I would appreciate it.. but I know it can't be 100%" and they will tell you if they are 100% certain or if they are iffy.  Just hope the baby has its legs open!!

I'm sure they could give you a guess if you asked, especially under the circumstances. It could definitely be too early to tell, but then again, maybe not. We got a 100% sure and very obvious answer at 16 weeks 4 days. (been confirmed several times since then as well)

  • My pic below was takin at 14wks 4days! We are still holding off buying anything but I think its pretty obvious we are having alittle boy! I'd go ahead an ask. Good luck and you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers
