Babies: 9 - 12 Months

DD has a black eye (PIP)

Well, Tillie found a spot we missed when babyproofing today. We have baseboard heaters under the window and DD just became interested in looking out the windows yesterday. She was standing there, playing with DH and fell. From the look of her eye, we figure she must have hit it on the corner of the heater.

It's not that bad, right? She calmed down fairly quickly after some ibuprofen and a bottle and was happy and playing before she went to bed (it happened about 1 1/2 hours before bedtime). There doesn't appear to be an injury to her eye, but I will call the dr if there is any blood around her eye or if it looks a ton worse in the morning. My poor baby. I just feel so bad that I didn't catch this, I should have prevented it. I'll be fixing it in the morning though. Is there anything I should be watching for or anything else I should do?

Re: DD has a black eye (PIP)

  • Awww, poor sweetie!  DS got a black eye while he was figuring out how to crawl.  He went from sitting to his knees and fell face-first onto a toy.

It should go away in a day or two.

  • Awww, poor girl.  She is so cute! Don't beat yourself up over it.  I'm sure it won't be her last bump or bruise.  Of course I understand why you feel bad about it and upset that you couldn't prevent it but these things just happen too fast.

  • Awww, poor thing!  My LO has a black eye too:

This was thanks to his big brother who was trying to share a truck with him *sigh*  He did cut the skin and it bled a bit but most of it is all under the skin.

It's hard not to blame yourself but try not to!  You LO is okay and that's what matters.

  • Poor guy! Just keep an eye on him, make sure the pupils are not dialated and that he isn't acting out of the usual.  My little tot has had a lot of ouchies and I really think I worry and hurt more than he.

  • Thanks guys! The eye injuries are so scary because I can't stop thinking- what if it had been one inch over. I know I will drive myself crazy doing that though. I really wish I could wrap in bubble wrap! And Mama Jan, thanks for sharing! I hope Asher is okay and heals up quickly!

I know!!  I keep thinking that about A's cut/bruise.  We are so lucky it wasn't up just an inch higher.  But that's part of what the bones around the eye are for (protection!).

Don't make yourself crazy - you will never survive toddlerhood if you dwell on those bumps, cuts and bruises.  Wink

  • Poor baby.  I love her name by the way!
  • Ouch!  I'm surprised DS hasn't had one.  He's had a fat lip, but not a black eye...yet.  I'm sure it's coming.
