Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When you are pregnant ...

When a woman is pregnant and they have to go for the routine blood tests and everything, including labor and delivery. Do 'they' (Edit) check your blood for drugs?

I ask because my friend was in the barbershop the other day and a girl we know who is pregnant came in asking everybody for weed. Indifferent

Cause in her case, I hope that if they do screen for drugs that she gets caught.

Re: When you are pregnant ...

  • Depends on the state.  In NV they test the babies' system for drugs at birth.  If drugs are found present the infant is immeadeatly seized by the state.  I don't know of anyone testing for drugs in a prenatal appt though.

  • I don't know if they test for drugs or not, but that disgusts me.

  • I'm pretty sure they did for me too because I remember the dr. mentioning something and him saying it was part of the routine blood work they did on everyone. And we're in cali.

  • When I found out she was pregnant I got mad/sad because she is a party girl/white trash. I'm sorry to say that about her, but she sells drugs, does coke and X all the time.

I prayed she stopped and one night i got to talking to her on fb to see how she was feeling and she was like telling me how she doesnt do it anymore and everything,

then my friend told me that like 2 days later. I was like ughh Lord help her!!

  • Yikes, I don't know, but I didn't do drugs.  In her case, I really hope she gets tested.  That's infuriating.
  • In our hosptial it is not routine, sometimes I think it should be. If the nurses or doctors suspect drug use we can request a drug screen, if the person refuses we contact child services. In such a case they would then get an order to test the baby (we can do this without the parents permission if the physician orders it). Obviously if someone refuses its pretty much guilt by omission.

Although we have had many many pt's admit to marijuana use and test positive, them and the baby and they take their baby home. On our area pot use ALONE is not grounds for aprehension. If they are financially stable and prepared to care for an infant (have a crib, clothes, etc) then they still get their baby. We actually encourage BFing in this case so the baby isn't cut off cold turkey. its so so sad and hard to see things like this.

Seriously?  SERIOUSLY????  The patients admit to smoking pot while pregnant and they are allowed to take their babies home as long as they have the necessary gear??

    That is just horrifying.

I know. I had one patient who said she smoked it 3 times a day because she had zero appetite without it and she figured it aws better for the baby to smoke pot and get nutrients from food then for her to not smoke and not eat.

Many people consider smoking pot not a drug, they think of it like cigarettes ( I am not agreeing, just saying what the social worker explained). We see SO MANY people come in that are high on cocaine and other heavy drugs, are prostitutes, HIV positive, homeless, etc. That the system is overloaded they have no where to put these babies. They are not elligable for adoption unless the mother signs over her rights, which rarely happens. if they are selfish enough to do drugs they are selfish enough to make an innocent baby be shuffled thru foster care too. For these reasons if people smoke pot but otherwise are prepared for a baby (hold jobs or have income, etc) they are followed by child services but keep the baby. I am not agreeing with this at all, its so hard to see this, or mentally challanged people take innocent babies home but we dont' get to make these choices.
