Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Raspberries. Another food question - sorry!

So BRU had these 12-packs of Earth's Best Organic Pear & Raspberries for 2 for $5 today. Great price, so I bought two 12-packs. Then I started worrying about the berry/allergy thing. I have googled and scoured Wholesome Baby Foods, and all I can figure out is that fresh berries can be problematic, but supposedly when they're cooked and put in baby food, that removes the allergenic properties? I'm sort of confused. Have any of you ladies asked your doctors about this? Am I being a bit ridiculous? I mean, it's a Stage 2 food - if I trust Earth Best's labeling, they should be absolutely fine to feed her.

I gave them to DS and he loved them. Our Dr. told us not to worry about the allergy issue and just no honey and limit seafood for the first year.

  • You can offer them to your LO but be sure to wash them very well (pesticides are one of the concerns with fresh berries) and cut them up (even though they seem small enough). They are slippery so can slide down baby's throat before being chewed/gummed enough. Also, some babies have a hard time digesting the seeds but will usually just pass them.. so don't be alarmed to see seeds in their diaper. Watch for an allergic reaction as you would with any other new food.

We were told to approach all fresh berries with caution because I have strawberry allergies in my family.

ETA: I just reread your post and noticed that you were talking about processed raspberries. Sorry.. I need to go to bed! ;) Processing the fruits can break down the allergenic proteins, so yes - it should be totally safe from an allergy standpoint.

I love your siggy pics - especially the second one. Your cat is so tolerant yet looks rather worried at the same time! Too cute.

I am glad I perused the wholesome baby foods site, because I had put away a bunch of stuff with blueberries in it due to the allergen worry - it looks like there's no issue with doing blueberries, either.

My pedi said that he recommends waiting until 9 months to do yogurt, but again Earth's Best has Stage 2 food with yogurt in it! I guess I should be used to a complete lack of consistency concerning everything baby related at this point.

I heard that as well, but I've given LO strawberry and raspberry purees. They were 8 months plus, so I figured why not and DS loves them.

  • I haven't talked to a a doctor about it, but I've read in several places that the strawberries in packaged store bought baby food goes through processes that remove the harmful parts.

Thanks, the cat is being surprisingly good with DS. Even when he is getting fist-fulls of fur ripped out Sad he just takes it.

I started on yogurt probably around 7 months then cottage cheese it was all good. My sister has an LO just 2 weeks older than mine so we sort of take turns trying something new to see if there's a reaction, so far neither of us have had a problem.

I haven't tried strawberries yet because of the whole allergy issue (even with the Dr's ok) but I plan too...one day soon.I think you just have to try when you are comfortable with it. But we have done eggs, including the whites.

    GL!
